Default Should Latinos Get Away With Using The N Word?
If whites refrain from using it, why won't Latinos think twice before using it? The word should only be reserved for blacks to be used among ourselves as a means of endearment. Latinos don't consider themselves and blacks as a monolithic unit, so why should they get away with using it? I find it very contradictive how non-black groups have a sense of superiority to blacks yet adopt black music, culture, and slang.

Don't speak for all "Latinos".

I have never used that word. But, I'll do the test to see if I can get away with it next time I see a black dude.

Afro Latinos, particualy puerto ricans in new york, and many dominicans, have a shared history with AA's, and they look part black, or black to many of us, thats why they get away with it, they have black in them. A white person would not get away with it.

But do these Nuyoricans and Dominicans consider themselves black?

African Americans are not the only blacks living in the USA, inquisitive. There are Afro-Latinos, West Indians, Haitians, Cape Verdeans, Brazilians, Nigerians, Ghanaians, etc. Anybody who identifies as black can use the word if they want to.

The Aframs around me don't care if Latinos say it at all so why should Latinos?

Because they don't consider themselves black.

Because they don't consider themselves black.
If it doesn't bother Aframs and Aframs themselves use it with Latinos and "allow" them, what makes you think Latinos are gonna go out of their way to reconsider what is already a norm?

Nobody should be using the word. Period!

But do these Nuyoricans and Dominicans consider themselves black?
DRs and mainland PRs tend to check the mixed/other box more frequently than other "latino" groups, which tells you they recognize at least more than one ancestry.

To be fair, I know three NYC PRs here (one mulatto, the other two generic Nuyoricans), and all of them only mention their indigenous ancestry. This, and none look triracial. One of the chicks even wanted to get a tattoo which payed homage to the original inhabitants of PR (she looks very west eurasian, but with a very slight modification).

I guess what I'm trying to say is that I'm not certain whether mainland PRs are always aware of ssa admixture (even when its apparent they have some)?

I think that only happens among some US-born Puerto Rican Americans on the mainland, not on the island.

i don't think i've ever met a black person who got angered by mexicans or puerto ricans saying the n word. infact i've heard them use it many times around them and they don't bat an eye at it. its a non issue really. i suppose if you are one of the more "white" looking hispanics its a big deal but for the most part they don't seem to care.

I think using a forbidden insult as an internalized term of endearment is retarded, and I'm happy to see at least some self-respecting black people agree. I can imagine some older conservative black man who grew up in segregation, out in public somewhere, see some young black and Mexican kids talking about nigga this and nigga that, and wanting to slap the shit out of them.

In Boston, almost all Cape Verdeans, Haitians, PRs, and Dominicans (DR) say it casually. Many Honduran Americans also say it without a problem. Although, people here would be weirded out if they heard it out the mouths of Guatemalans, Salvadorans, Mexicans, Peruvians, and Colombians.

It was a Black guy at school who had seen my family album and told everyone HE GOT MO NIGGAS THAN MY FAMILY . So us Black Spanish speakers can be called niggas like it's all good then huh?

My sister would say it when she was younger (or at least more). She never got called out or anything, but I think she made sure they knew she was Mexican jaja

you honkies just can't understand. its about reclaiming the word or whatever.. i know the fact that you can use a word to describe yourself and close friends and even white people you are friendly with as a term of endearment and at the same time want to physically attack said white friend or anyone of a similar skin color who uses it is completely lacking in logic, but you can't use logic with an issue like this. there is no logical thinking behind it we (as i, a white person, have decided in my infinite wisdom to speak for every and all black people on this subject.lol.) just like having a word that you can't say because it makes us feel more powerful. we own something you can never possibly obtain ever.

this is my idea of the thinking behind the use of the word among blacks/hispanics etc.

on a similar note.
