I'm shocked, really.

That's revenue that they are flushing down the toilet.

maybe the imagine it's producing is more damaging than the money it generates.

That game was horrible publicity for the league.

The thing the players are going to miss is all the replacement players making their bonuses.

Still garnered ratings, and therefore advertising dollars.

I would think the network that carried it would be looking for some sort of compensation.

Eh, doubtful.

It's not like people are going to stop watching NFL Football because of the Pro Bowl.
Even the game itself wins the ratings for the day.

Is the contract up after this season? I think they are talking doing away with it starting in 2013 season

It would not bother me if all Pro Sports followed suit, but this one was certainly the worst of them all.
I cannot say I have ever watched it.

I believe the extensions are already set. I think that was a big part of the lockout angst.

Good riddance.

It appears that the NFL sometimes makes a good decision even if it takes a drop out of the money bucket.

It's not necessarily a good decision, because it ultimately should affect it's earning power.

I realize some people dislike the Pro Bowl, and that's fine, because I'm one of them.
But lots of people, like fahvra, still watch the game for various reasons.

When the Pro Bowl is aired, those of us who dislike it can just choose not to watch. We have that option.
When it's not aired, those people who want to watch lose that option.

Let's not pretend that some sort of compelling programming will be put in that time slot.

Meh, Any serious football fan knew this game was nothing more than a popularity contest and a joke. Yea, it gains revenue but the only advantage this game has is players plugging their team to other players.

You think people like that are going to stop watching the NFL and therefore decrease the earning power because there is no longer a Pro Bowl?

That's laughable, at best.

Just because some people like it or watch it doesn't make it a bad idea to get rid of it. It's a terrible product for various reasons....including the fact that even the players don't care to be involved in it. When the players skip it entirely or mail it in, it's a good idea to get rid of it.

If they hadn't announced it, nobody would have noticed for a few years.

Never said that or implied that.
The earning power is decreased because they are taking away an earning opportunity for the networks, who will be asking for concessions for the loss of revenue. I thought I had made that part clear earlier.

The serious fan isn't really a concern of the NFL. Serious fans are hooked no matter what.
It's the casual fan they are after. Those are the people watching the Pro Bowl. They don't realize it sucks.

I read that this is not official yet, though probably very likely.
