Default Instant Replay
With SNF debacle, there has been instant replay talk on MN sports radio and what to do. There have been issues with it in multiple games, and there are times when ref's appear to be making it up as they go along.

NHL has instant replay, but all reviews go to league office through the power of Satelite TV. With today's technology, this doesnt add time, and it removes the flaw of a ref making it up as he goes along because he doesnt know the rule.

On the other side, how can we have ref's that dont know the rules? AND why are reviews limited if they win their challenges? They only get to correct 3 mistakes?

Bad calls are part of the game, there is human error. Instant Replay hasn't solved that, as their is/has been error in the review.

Does NFL leave as is?
Change to NHL system, all reviews central location?
All reviews booth review, no coach challenge?
Elminate instant replay?

What say you SB land.

I've always had a problem with the system of ball "spotting". When it comes down to 4th and "inches" to think that a team could have gotten those inches on previous plays just irks the shit out of me. I feel there should be a tracking system like in tennis they can review after every play.

Don't know if this is on the topic of "instant replay" but whatever.

They limit the challenges so games don't last 5 hours.

It must only be in Minnesota where they are focusing on the SNF game. The talking head discussion I've been hearing all centers on the Steelers/Dolphins.

I say they review every play after the game is over and issue a report on Monday (or Tuesday) as to what they decided to change.

I'm in favor of getting the call right, all the time. I've long been a proponent of having an extra ref in the booth - and if an egregious call is missed (regardless of any coaching challenge), it should be corrected immediately.

I understand the hockey system, but I'm not familiar enough with the game to know how/when reviews occur. Is it only on goals?

Whether it's centralized or distributed (an extra ref in the booth), there should also be a squad of refs/experts available for a rule interpretation. Wire in the refs on the field, allow the booth ref to conference them with the league office, and they can all come to an agreement.

The rules should never need to be guessed at.

I'd also suggest that the refs on the field get an iPad-type device so they can see the replays right where they are while engaging in the discussion.

You'd think spotting could be pretty close to an exact science, via microchips and sensors.

I'm with you on the GPS idea, and it's doable with current technology. Problem is that you can't define where a knee hits.

What you COULD do is have the local GPS signal be merged with the video - so you can 'tag' when the knee hits (assuming you can see it) and then use the GPS info to determine the ball location.

I use 'GPS' here because that's the commercial tech - you wouldn't use actual satellite info, as it's not detailed enough. You'd have to put sensors on/around the field to get it to be finely tuned enough - only question would then be how does the chip hold up in an actual game.

More part time refs?

The ones not mobile enough to get around the field would be ideal candidates. And I'd like full-time refs, but even the part-time model would work here.

I specified MN radio in my initial post. The discussion started BEFORE the SNF game. I'm not really interested in rehashing what is done...but see SB thoughts on what should be done in future. While SNF game is what prompted me to ask, it's not a new debate.

In the MN/GB there were 4 TD's called, 3 of them weren't TD's, one of them was. Two of them were properly overturned, one that was called a TD was improperly overturned, and another wasnt challenged, but should've been as Mn would've won (I'll put this on Chili). How can you have that many mistakes in ONE GAME.

This isnt an inssue of missing a hold, PI, or whatever. This is missing a TD call.

that as i say that, I get D's question. That's what prompted ME personally. I know there are issues. I'm not pinning loss on the officals. Mn's beloved Sexter threw 3 picks, one returned for a TD...tough to win when you do that....and we still had a chance for W at the end....

I think it's a valid discussion.

I see the same issue with NFL replay as comes up with MLB replay discussions.

The goal of the refs on the field is to manage the game to be within the rules, and to get the calls correct impartially. As long as use of technology doesn't significantly impact gameplay, why wouldn't you want to use every tool you can to achieve those goals?

Human element keeps cropping up, but that's a bunch of bull. I don't care if an ump has a wide strike zone, as long as it's consistent. Likewise in the NFL, I want a catch to be a catch in every game, not some of the games. Whatever tool you need to use to get it right HAS to be considered.

Get rid of it.

It stupid, wastes time, makes games unwatchable, and they still get the call wrong many times.

Hire full time refs. Simplify the rules.

I'm all for that, they're in effect making it more complicated, which leads to more mistakes.

I agree, but that's why you need guys off the field helping to make the calls. No 'running to the sideline' - 95% of the calls are right. It's that 5% that are questionable, and a quick resolution to them helps the game.

A ball sensor, and different sensors for the uniforms of each team.

They DID make that one change to elimate the "force out" rule, where even if the guy is pushed he needs to still have both feet down. More stuff like that.

Before they just assumed the guy would get both feet down.

Speaking of assuming: pass interference needs to be a 15 yard penalty.

Especially since it is called on the defense like 3 out of 4 times.
