There's speed and there's football speed. Football speed being with wearing pads and you don't normally run 40 yards in a straight line in a game. Much like DE's don't run 40 yards to get to the QB.

you dont draft a WR cause he runs fast, williamson couldnt catch when he was a gamecock, why do they think that would change

Once upon a time corners could mug wide recievers, so slower, strong guys could be more effective has well.

How they catch the ball is important as well. Rice was a master at catching the ball in such a way that it was natural for him to spin away from the nearest defender and rack up the YAC.

I remember watching Steve Largent in training camp years ago. He wasn't big, hell only about my height, and he wasn't that fast.

But he always seemed to get open. It looked to me he could turn on a dime and ran perfect routes. Also seemed to have the ability to fake out the DB.

I remember one of the DB's, a much more physically gifted player than Largent, shaking his head and telling a teamate, "I can't cover him."

tim brown

1094 catches 14934 yards 100 TDs

Cris Carter

1101 catches 13899 yards 130 Tds

if you needed a catch, i'd take carters hands over anyone, he just needed to get a pinky on it...also he was pretty good at drawing PI calls

Difference is, those guys weren't supposed to be fast. They were supposed to run crisp routes and use their body to get open (ala Larry Fitzgerald present day).

And Carter one of the two best receivers of all time? What kind of meds have you been placed on? I can think of no fewer than a dozen receivers I would take over Cris Carter--2 of whom are active present day.

Indeed. Largent was always a posession receiver....always open...willing to go across the middle....not tall or fast, but always open and ran great routes...
