Mo'...i dono if you payed attention to sully's rankings last year, but by the end, they wound up being pretty damn good.

This isnt the ESPN power rankings most of us are used to...this is taken game-by-game...and as of right now, the Fins, Steelers, etc. played the best games.

The rankings always look flawed at first...after about 5 or 6 weeks they'll start to look more normal. This is due to certain guys having rediculous games (a la Willie Parker and Gus Ferrotte), as well as favorable matchups for certain teams.
I didn't pay attention toward the end. Kudos to sully if he got it pretty close. That's pretty cool if the formula is accurate.

I have class to go to now...

Lions will be #1 next week after they blow out the Bears.

2005 NFL Power Rankings

Yes, they are back this year. I did minimal tweaking to the formula, so the values will be very similar to last year's. I've entered in most of the numbers from the early games, so I bet I can have rankings sans MNF by tomorrow. As of right now, there are a couple of teams in the top 5 I didn't expect to be in there before today.

miami? cincy? kc? ughh...tampa?

Well, I thought I'd get these done earlier today over lunch, but I forgot to email the spreadsheet from my home computer to my work computer.

Meh, I'm leaving soon anyway. Expect these bad boys to be up in an hour (Note: It is possible that the Colts/Ravens game may change the rankings, as all teams start out the year at 0. I have to add those stats into the mix). I will tell you this - There is one team that performed so badly that they are already into the negative numbers on the rankings, just one game in.

Hah, you only wish.

Without numbers, here's the top 5 right now:

1] Dolphins
2] Steelers
3] Bills
4] Lions
5] Patriots

And... The team that was in the negative? It was the Titans. However, the last couple of stats I needed got them out of the red and into the black.

For those who are very curious, here's how they turned out at the end of last year:

I'd seriously suggest looking at the power ratings in week 17.

That being said, it is hard to look at teams in week 1 and rank them, regardless of how you are doing it. It's a new season.

Wins (Division/Conference/Non Conference)
Losses (Division/Conference/Non Conference)
Points scored/allowed
Time of possession
Yards per play
3rd down conversion %
Turnovers (Giveaways/Takeaways)
Field Goal %
Kickoff Return Average

I'll be honest, i dont have a formula. I watch the games check the highlights and read game stats. Calling the Lions and Fins better then the Pats right now is crazy. You should look deeper then just the stats. Mental toughness and heart arn't sitting in a stat book. You can all think i'm wrong, which is fine, but i dont think you can look at a bunch of numbers and then rank teams without looking deeper into their game play.

Your kidding right? The Lions and Fins ahead of the Pats? Please tell me this is a joke.

1) Pats- Offense picked it up later in the game and the defense looked good on every play but the lucky one where Moss caught the ball off a lucky bounce on the shoulder pads.
2) Steelers- Duce who? Bettis who? Willie Parker thats who. Big Ben added to his fame by spanking some peeps.
3) Colts- Took the Colts a half to clear the cobwebs but man, they are impressive on offense. The Defense doesn't look to bad either almost laying a shutout on the Ravens doorstep
4) Falcons- With their win over the Eagles and the improved play of Mike Vick (yes i said improved, if you didn't see that pass to Jenkins i think his name is and can't say that he hasn't improved you wern't watching the same football game as i was) the Falcons could represent the NFC in the big game. Hall looked like an all-pro in his second year and the rest of the defense played very well.
5) Chiefs- Most of the talk about the Chiefs in the last 3 years has been about offense. But from what i saw from the defense Sunday they will be the ones making the headlines this year. The offense will put up the numbers but they won't have to win games by throwing all of the time. Look for the one-two punch of Priest Holmes and Larry Johnson to kill teams this year and chew up the clock.

The Lions and Fins have no place in the top five until they win atleast 2 more games in the next two weeks. Lets face it, Green Bay and Denver didn't look that good. Plummer couldn't hit water throwing from a boat and Farve looked like he invoked the spirit of Ryan Leaf. Teams like the Eagles, Panthers, and Jets will bounce back and teams like the Fins, Lions, and Saints will come down to earth and suck it up again this year.
what formula did you use to rank your teams?

It's not a joke. I'm using actual game statistics to come up with these, not opinions that may be biased one way or another.

Stuff like wins, losses, points scored/allowed, yards, and a whole slew of other categories are included in this, and those numbers are weighted. If you don't like it, then that's not really my problem, is it?

BILBONDER 04-28-2006 07:00 AM

His ranks are based solely on stats. It isn't like Miami and Detroit will be in the Top 5 very long.

ebookinfo 05-30-2006 07:00 AM

I just know that the Lions are better than every team in the league. Because I said so.

Enjoymmsq 06-16-2006 07:00 AM

I think it's silly to say someone is improved based on one pass, but that's just me.

Agreed...a sub-50% completion percentage and merely 150 yards is hard to consider one a "megastar" as Mr. I Love the Falcons John Madden liked to refer to Vick as.

Yes, the pass was a good one, but besdies that he didnt look like much of a QB.
