Quarterback Ranking list 2005
Mock me freely, folks! My ranking of quarterbacks is complete and available for viewing. Following each of the top 20 QBs is a brief explanation for their spot.
The Top 10 1] Peyton Manning - Currently the best in the game, IMO. Had one of the best seasons as a quarterback in league history, and regularly has his teams into the playoffs. 2] Daunte Culpepper - Had an equally impressive season as Manning, and also is a threat to run. Time will tell if Moss was as much a factor to his success as some would think. 3] Donovan McNabb - Got his team to a Super Bowl while having arguably the best season of his career. 4] Brett Favre - While Favre is in the latter half of his career, his numbers are still among the best in the league. 5] Tom Brady - A bit overrated in my eyes, that does not equate to bad. Brady still puts up wins as well as respectable numbers. 6] Jake Delhomme - Someone I consider a tad underrated, Delhomme had an incredible season last year statswise, and I think with a healthy roster the Panthers could've done much better than they did. 7] Trent Green - Another quarterback I think is a bit underrated. Green just keeps putting up gaudy numbers with crap at the wide receiver position, but could use a few more wins to help out his cause for this spot. 8] Jake Plummer - Say what you want about him being too high on this list, but since coming to Denver he has shown that he's able to be a winning quarterback, and even managed to throw for 4000 yards last year while the Broncos made the playoffs. 9] Drew Brees - Could've been higher, but uncertainty regarding his ability to repeat last year's performance shot down that possibility. Regardless, Drew put up the big numbers that I remember seeing while he was at Purdue while the Chargers made the postseason. 10] Matt Hasselbeck - Had a bit of an off year, and some receivers who had trouble catching, but still managed to put up decent numbers. Quarterbacks 11-20 11] Chad Pennington - Generally a solid quarterback, if Pennington could stay healthy, I think he would've warranted a higher ranking. 12] Brian Griese - Griese started off hot and all of Tampa Bay's games last year were won with him as the starting QB. 13] Marc Bulger - I think that the system helps Bulger put up his great numbers, but regardless, he is doing something right to pass for nearly 4000 yards and put up a rating over 90. 14] Ben Roethlisberger - Had an impressive rookie season as the Steelers went 15-1, but was not nearly as great looking in the playoffs. Still showed he can be very good at the pro level. 15] Byron Leftwich - Didn't necessarily have the numbers to back up the rating, but his passing accuracy is insane. I expect Leftwich to have a very good season this year and justify me putting him at this spot. 16] Aaron Brooks - While he can put up good yardage numbers, he doesn't have much else in his favor to boost his stock any more. 17] David Carr - Carr has the potential to be a great quarterback, and put up some good numbers this year. However, he needs to improve more not only to justify this position, but future rating boosts. 18] Michael Vick - A phenomenal runner, but a below average passer. Vick needs to greatly improve his passing prowess to move into the upper echelon of quarterbacks. 19] Kurt Warner - Age may be getting to Warner, but he has shown that he can still produce when he is depended on. 20] Carson Palmer - I debated between him, Bledsoe, and Collins since I think they are at the same leve. Palmer was given the edge because of his potential and a slight statistical advantage. The Rest: Rex Grossman, JP Losman, Trent Dilfer, Drew Bledsoe, AJ Feeley/Gus Frerotte, Alex Smith/Tim Rattay, Eli Manning, Joey Harrington/Jeff Garcia, Kerry Collins, Kyle Boller, Patrick Ramsey/Mark Brunell, Billy Volek/Steve McNair |
I'd find it hard to strenuously disagree with any of your placements.

I'm a vick hater, but thats too low. Dude does win ballgames. May have put Collins up there too, but other than that its good Sully.
|
i'll reserve judgement on brady's ranking for the end of the year. but if charlie weis means that much, i'm even happier that he's at ND.
mcnabb is too low. |

His numbers when forced to pass (Read: When he puts up good passing stats in a game) in regards to stats and wins/losses are abyssmal, thus my rationale for putting him where I did. |

Is this also the order in which you'd take these QB's for your fantasy football league? I'm not sure I would agree that Green is underrated, and don't see why Kurt Warner is even on the list...he's a backup. I would rate Leftwich and Carr a little higher, while Griese should drop some. I'm undecided about Plummer, and I think Brees will have another great year. I don't think Brady is overrated for the simple fact that he kept proving me wrong when I did think he was overrated.
I think the new no contact rules (which I think are a bunch of BS) will change all the record books and makes some of these guys look better than they truly are. |

Now, let's see if I can retort my positions on all of these: 1] From my point of view, yes, Green is underrated. I don't often hear him being mentioned among the top quarterbacks in the league unless it's for fantasy football, and that's where I think he belongs. 2] I assume you have proof that Kurt Warner is a backup? Last I checked, Denny's got him starting in Arizona. 3] As far as Leftwich and Carr, I could see them being rated higher, but at the same time, they've still got some progress to make before I can put them higher than they are. 4] I figured I would take some flack about Griese, but I do believe this is the 2nd year out of 3 where he has put up very good numbers while starting off the season on the bench. Like I said, Tampa Bay only won when Griese started. 5] Regarding Brady, overrated doesn't mean bad. I keep hearing him described in a God-like sense. Yeah, he's good, but dang, there are better quarterbacks right now IMO. There's no shame in being a top 5 quarterback. Aaaaaaaaaand, I think that settles that from my perspective. |
Oh Dear God.....Bledsoe didn't even make the top 20. According to Sully, it's gonna be another long hard season.

And?

I disagree with Plummer even being in the top ten. Any QB who throws with his off hand should never be ranked in the top 10. Warner was overrated 4 years ago, and hes overrated now. He isn't even worth mentioning on a list of top QB's. All he used to do was throw the ball as hard as he could to a spot and someone ran under it. Farve, while i believe to be one of the best QB's in history, shouldn't be in the top 5 in my opinion. You have to go with what you think they will do next year, not what they have done in the past.
1) Manning 2) Culpepper 3) Brady 4) Mcnabb 5) Green 6) Delhomme 7) Farve 8) Brees 9) Hasselbeck 10) Vick 11) Plummer 12) Pennington 13) Bulger 14) Leftwich 15) Roethlisberger and who cares after that. |
I would say Green should be 5, Bulger, Carr, Vick and Palmer are also too low. I would put McNair on this list considering the arguement used for Pennington could be used for him as well except McNair was always a better QB. I don't see how Greise could be that high since he might not even have the starting job in TB at the begining of the season and he hasn't done anything for them over a whole season like some of the guys lower on the list. I wouldn't put Warner in my top 30 QB's.

Now, let's see if I can retort my positions on all of these:
1] From my point of view, yes, Green is underrated. I don't often hear him being mentioned among the top quarterbacks in the league unless it's for fantasy football, and that's where I think he belongs. I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree on this one, he's never really done anything to show me he's a top QB. 2] I assume you have proof that Kurt Warner is a backup? Last I checked, Denny's got him starting in Arizona. If he is, it's a mistake. Warner was a product of the system, much like Bulger is now. He can't take a hit, and fumbles too much. 3] As far as Leftwich and Carr, I could see them being rated higher, but at the same time, they've still got some progress to make before I can put them higher than they are. I think they will both have break out seasons this year. 4] I figured I would take some flack about Griese, but I do believe this is the 2nd year out of 3 where he has put up very good numbers while starting off the season on the bench. Like I said, Tampa Bay only won when Griese started. Look at the options, if he were playing for half the teams in the league he would never have set foot on the field. 5] Regarding Brady, overrated doesn't mean bad. I keep hearing him described in a God-like sense. Yeah, he's good, but dang, there are better quarterbacks right now IMO. There's no shame in being a top 5 quarterback. I'm not saying he should have Favre (God) like status either, but the guy wins. You can argue with anything but his record which is nearly flawless. |
