Your List of Top 5 Running Backs

Since the WR thread generated some interest, I figured why not start one about the top 5 running backs. In addition to the top 5 running backs, consider these questions:

(1) What running back do you want on 4th and goal on the 1 yard line?
(2) You need to win one game, what running back do you let carry the team?
(3) Who is the best receiving running back? Who is the best blocking running back?

I have to think about this one. I'll submit a list sooner or later.

Seems like LT is at the top of a lot of people's lists. I also noticed that it seems like the AFC has a lot more talent at RB than the NFC.

AFC has: LT, Jamal Lewis, Holmes, Edge, Corey Dillon, Rudi Johnson, Curtis Martin, Taylor (from JAX - can't remember his name right now), Travis Henry (has he been traded yet?), Player X in Denver. AFC also picked up Ronnie Brown.

It seems like the NFC has some younger guys that could make some noise though: Julius Jones, Kevin Jones, Cedric Benson, Stephen Jackson, Cadillac Williams, Foster. And has some established guys like Portis, Green, Alexander, and Tiki.

Still, it seems like the AFC has better RBs.

1. LT
2. Jamal Lewis
3. Rudi Johnson
4. Shaun Alexander
5. Ahman Green

#1 Jamal Lewis
#2 LT
#3 Best recieving is LT. Best Blocking back is....hmmm...Tiki??

Oh geeze. I just assumed that I mentioned him. I was so busy thinking about all the non-Eagles guys I skipped right over him. I also forgot to mention Mahe.
Perry's going to break out this year as well.

Yep, I forgot McAllister. I knew I forgot a couple NFC guys -- Deuce and Westbrook.

The AFC just seems to have some incredible talents with Jamal Lewis, Priest Holmes, Corey Dillon, LaDainian Tomlinson, Edge, Curtis Martin. It seems like those 6 almost blow away the NFC competition. The top of the NFC has Green, Alexander, McAllister, Westbrook, and Portis. And I would probably take 5 or all 6 of the AFC guys over the NFC guys -- with the possible exception of Shaun Alexander.
The AFC has some older gents though. Holmes' injuries are starting to take a toll, not to mention his line is a big help if you saw any of the other backs production. Martin's best days are now behind him. Edge still doesn't look like the Edge of old and he also plays with a great supporting cast. Lewis is good, but he's a bit of a question mark in a few areas, though if healthy is great, but again the left side of that line is just sick. LT to do what he did as the main option and being such a workhorse is the most outstanding to me.

It seems it was only a couple years ago when there was a clear cut #1

Holmes injury fogs in abit.

1. LT
2. Lewis
3. Holmes (only due to injury)
4.Alexander
5. Portis

Some many are so close. Its a tough pick.

It's tough to say. In the NFC you have more teams that use a committe approach. So you have Jackson splitting time with Faulk(who if you're going to use Holmes up there for the AFC, might as well equate him to Marshall. Yes, he had more productive years than Marshall as of late, but the decline with injuries is getting there.) You have Dunn/Duckett and on top of that they split time with Vick. Foster splitting with Davis. Whether or not the committe is used because the other guys can't do it alone is debatable. You're giving Rudi Johnson far too much credit. You forgot one of your top 5 overall on your list of NFC.

Both conferences are pretty much even, though AFC might have a few more up top, though I would say both have a good amount of youngsters with loads of potential who are still trying to reach the next level of RB's.

Yes. He should tear it up in NFL Europe and/or on the practice squad.
You really don't think he'll make the team? I'm not sold on Buck yet, so if he has problems, Perry will be the third head ahead of Mahe.

The list should only have active players. Forgot to mention that.
How about a thread for all-time backs?

Agreed there, many of those guys are in the twilights of their careers. Curtis Martin -- no so sure. He's rushed for 1000+ every season of his career, hasn't he? I think he'll do it again for at least 2 more years.

Maybe I'm wrong about the whole AFC > NFC thing. It might just be a skewed perception.
