Default My recent drawings
Here's some info... I've drawn on and off for a number of years... Over the summer I just decided to double major in my current major (Computer Science) and Art.

The last time I've done any artwork was ~4 years prior to taking this Drawing I class when I went to an art school and decided it wasn't for me.

At any rate, here are some of the things I produced this quarter, some were in class and some were out of class assignments.

I apologize in advance for the picture quality in a lot of these, they were all taken on my cell phone. I don't have easy access to a scanner right now.

In class cow skull study with white conte on black charcoal paper:

Out of class assignment for extreme light, primarily vine charcoal used:

In class caster plast/mold study in charcoal:

In class caster plast/mold study in white conte:

The follow are a series of 6 done for an out of class assignment where we're take take elements of content (subject matter, style, composition, etc) from a well known artist. I chose Chet Zar for mine. These were to be done on small scale, no more than 9 square inches; all mine were 3x3.

In class skull studies, done on charcoal paper first covered with powdered charcoal, then erased and added to with more charcoal for darker areas:

My final out of class assignment, the basic theme was to be portraying motion:

I know there's a lot of things that could be improved on a lot of them. I'm hoping I can keep up the discipline to keep drawing on my own time over winter break, and beyond. I really enjoyed the professor we had, he's very humble even though he's very successful and is very helpful/encouraging. Regrettably I can't take Drawing II next quarter because of a schedule conflict with a required computer science class, but I'm doing an independent study with him in the spring (even though I already have 2 studio classes scheduled that quarter, heh).

I'd like to as well. I have a Bandit 600 right now, I'll probably hang on to that until I'm done with college. Next stop will probably be an SV650, SV1000, or GSX-R 750 or maybe even a Honda CB919...

I like the Triumphs a lot, but they're not only more expensive up front, their parts are often more expensive and you may have to wait a few weeks to get them too. The big four (Suzuki, Yamaha, Honda, and Kawasaki) have parts almost everywhere, readily available, and cheap. For that reason, they'll probably be 3-4 bikes down the line when (hopefully) I can afford it.

Actually here in europe the triumphs are pretty cheap relatively..price/quality that is!
My next step will probably be SV650 ..as its a logical successor to my GS500. Then after SV650 I'd like to go street triple..then finally a 1000 twin or speed triple.

I assume you mean CBR 919? Or fireblade 918?

Ah, gotcha. I didn't realize you were in Europe.

A few more:

These pictures don't really do them justice (cell phone), the lighting is pretty poor and can wash things out and lose texture and sharpness.

Very good shading techniques. Don't mean to sound critical but but I can't help but feel that proportions on some drawings could be improved. I could be wrong and it could just be me but just letting you know for what ever its worth!

Thanks as well, I don't mind at all. There are a few that could definitely be improved in various ways. 2 of the small series drawings got into our school's juried art show (I entered 5 total, 2 got in). I've been wanting to use a few of the small 3x3 series drawings as references/idea for larger 9x9 or maybe even 12x12 drawings, but I don't have the time right now...

I have a LOT of ideas for things I want to do, but my other classes/obligations are keeping me busy and our 2D design class projects are moderately restricted, at least to the point where the ideas I have won't fit the projects... I do have an independent drawing study next quarter, so I'm hoping I'll be able to work on a few of my ideas then.

Here are a couple of my recent doings:
For my computer art class, my first go at the "cliche" Photoshop star field:
http://img222.imageshack.us/img222/6...oject22600.jpg

cropped version:
http://img404.imageshack.us/img404/2...ct2cropped.jpg

-Always been interested in doing something like this, but had no idea how until I found a decent tutorial. I enjoyed it quite a bit and could see myself doing more... There's definitely a few problems with it, but for my first attempt, I'm relatively happy with the results.

For my independent drawing study: Inspired by Alice in Chains "Rooster"
http://images56.fotki.com/v1597/phot...rooster-vi.jpg

-This was pretty difficult, it's one of few drawings I'm somewhat happy with where I wasn't just looking directly at something and drawing/copying it. I sketched out the composition I wanted first, and used about 6-10 photographic references to create the texture, folds, etc that I wanted.

-There are some things I'm not happy about with it, such as the face and helmet, but white conte and white charcoal pencils on black paper aren't very forgiving to work with. I might do some work with it in photoshop cleaning things up, fixing things, and adding a few things.

Luckily, I just ordered a Wacom Medium Intuos 4 and it should be here tomorrow! [thumbup]

Got my Intuos today... Just played around with editing/cleaing up my Rooster image... Here's what I have so far, planning to do a little more, adding a bit of text, and maybe some extra things into the image itself.

Quick 15-20 min sketch I did tonight... I'll probably do 1-3 more of them before I start work on the main drawing messing around with composition, background, etc etc...

I see you like using dark bg and white for the detail, im really thinking of getting some grey paper myself and doing a chalk/charcoal drawing, ive seen some really impressive results with it, i once did a drawing like that when i was in art college, it came out really good, i guess ill have a look tomorrow in some art stores hehe, anyway yeah to comment on the latest piece, the body has got a pretty solid stance to it, you can tell hes wieght lifting even without the barbell all in all good work so far mate

Yeah, I like using white on black for some reason... It's like my brain can manage adding light better than it can adding shading/dark areas. At the same time, it depends what's being drawn too, some methods don't work so well for certain subjects. I didn't know you went to art school/college. Where did you go and what was your major/concentration? Are you working in that field now?

Yeah, a few. I was just a computer science major and was going to minor in art, but I was going to be struggling to find classes/electives to finish out my last 2 years and stay a full time student, so I decided to major in art too. Right now I'm taking computer art, 3D design, and an independent drawing study, along with my last art history class (which blows).

Next year I'll be taking computer art 2 more times, illustration, printmaking, and depending how things go (either take drawing 2 during the summer, or have the prof waive it for me), maybe advanced drawing along with getting ready for my senior exhibition, the rest of my computer science classes, and my computer science practicum.

No idea what I'm going to do when I'm finished though, whether I'll go to grad school right away, work a job I've interned at the last couple year for a bit, then decide, or try to get a job in the field I want (computer animation/3D rendering and/or concept art) and see if they'd pay for grad school. I'm not opposed to grad school, but I just don't want to pay for it, it'll take me long enough to pay back my undergrad.
