I am rather shy when it comes to sharing my work on the forum, though I'd like to change that. Considering we are in our new home, I think the timing is appropriate. Thanks so much, Bear! That project was the most rewarding yet difficult thing I've done. It was very therapeutic and at times I felt her with me when I looked through the viewfinder as cornball as that sounds.

All the photos are just gorgeous, but the ones inspired by your grandmother are really special. Do you show? I'd think a whole show like that would get a fair amount of attention.

I made a total of ten photographs for the series about my Gram. I inherited three small photo albums worth of snapshots shortly before she passed away. I knew I wanted to work with them in some form, but I wasn't sure how. It took a long time for me to come up with my concept... so I didn't have much time to shoot in the end. I was well into November/December for most of these. (I'm in Canada!) I shot many of in the same day, plus a few reshoots. A fellow student/friend was my model and I will forever owe her. I still feel bad how much I made her freeze. While I enjoy crunch time, I wish I had spent longer on these. I'm not completely happy with all of them and would love to work on it again in the future.

I have shown the series four times and once in its entirety. For my graduating class exhibition, I was selected with 4 others among 50 or so students to have pieces purchased by the dean. He bought the White Dress. That photo seems to be a favorite among people and also won a People's Choice award in another show.

Artist Statement

In The Moment, 2007

Most family photographs are created in order to document the past. They are designed to be glanced upon without room for interpretation, but sometimes they can be more.

When I first began studying old photographs of my recently deceased grandmother, I found myself trying to learn more about her – who she was and where she came from. It took some time to accept that the images could not tell me what I wanted them to. The surface was all that remained and it left me unfulfilled. The photographs of my grandmother are the foundation for this series. I have loosely reconstructed each scene, allowing the contemporary environment and fashion to bleed through. Through the use to type cropping and masking of identity, I have tried to create images that involve tension between what the viewer is allowed to see and what is left desired.

In The Moment touches upon photography’s quality of one dimensionality, but I remain uncertain on where the line is drawn. The images that I have created have provided me with a certain degree of closeness to my grandmother and they have essentially allowed me to accept her death by layering present experiences over a faded past.

marci, I showed your "re-photo" gallery to a photographer friend of mine who did something similar with historical architectural photos and he was totally blown away (as am I). I love your take on it.

It's shameful that I haven't updated my thread in over six months!!

I took some photos of my friend's baby today. It was more difficult than I figured it would be - a rusty photographer and a cranky baby! By the time I was really into it and she was cooperative, the sun went down. I hope to use this little model as an excuse to start shooting on a regular basis.
