Default A couple of shots from the ZSL (in London)
At London Zoo, the ZSL (Zoological Society of London) have recently opened a new walk-through aviary. I visited last Saturday with my 30D + 100-400 lens and monopod.

It was pretty hard dealing with the mist sprays in the aviary (both for the health of my camera equipment, and the way the mist tended to bleach the colour out of my shots if I was at the wrong angle).

Dang! They look fantastic! [thumbup] I have been a P&S man but planning on getting the D300 with 17-55mm f/2.8 lens soon!

When i saw the pictures, i thought it'd be great to take my kit down to snap some pictures and then you said about the mist and thought no way. How did you stop the mist from damaging your stuff?

The mist sprays are on a timer, with the nozzles around the walls.

On one side you can stand under an overhang, behind the sprays. Apart from that, you just wait under the overhang until the sprays stop - give it 5 seconds for the air to clear, then dash out, take some shots, and get back under cover before the sprays start again.

Standing towards the middle of the enclosure you are basically OK, as the sprays don't reach that far in any serious amount.

your inhuman, is there a great deal of PP going on in your shots to get such great colour or it is just hardware+skill?

You'd rather not know when you see the price

Some PP, but mainly just levels and sharpening / local contrast adjustment. I always shoot RAW, then process first with CaptureOneLE, followed by Photoshop for the levels and sharpening.

Contray to what people might say, you can't take a "crap" shot and make it good with some PP ! Whats critical is to have the right lighting, and use the correct camera settings (f.stop, ISO, shutter speed etc) in order to isolate your subject, and get the right "pop" for your resulting image.

The lens is the Canon 100-400 F4.5-5.6L IS. It retails for about 1600 euro.

Oh, and by the way, most of those shots were ISO 800

didn't think it would be cheap

it's nice to have some freedom with ISO settings now though, with my S1 IS was too noisy at ISO50 so going above that was out of the question.

i've posted this in my other thread after spending about a week looking for a lens, considering the price limitations would this be a decent step for a first lens (in that zoom range)

update: I've had some contact with ZSL London Zoo, and they want to use my photographs.

They are a charity, so on this occasion I've agreed to make my shots available free of charge - although they will include my name and website address with any shots used. No idea at this stage how they want to use them, but they asked for hi-res tiff files, which would suggest they don't just intend to use them on their website.

I'll have to wait and see I guess.
