Default Probably the most surreal landscape photo I've taken so far
California coast, 2007:

Strangely enough, I didn't alter the colors in any way.

Yes, I do, but it's currently being submitted to istockphoto.com for approval into my portfolio.

Lovely. I really like the visible atmosphere as the cliff edges get more distant

Canon 20D with a 24-70 2.8L lens.

The photo is completely untouched and un-altered, except for one little trick...

It's a composite of 5 versions of the same photo. I simply took the original photo, darkened the levels in Photoshop by ~2 stops, saved it, made another version that was approximately 1 stop darker, saved it, made a version that was ~1 stop brighter, saved it, and made a version that was ~2 stops brighter. Then I took all 5 images and loaded them into Photomatix and told it to make a HDR composite (even though it's not TRUE HDR, it still gives it a great effect. Normally you'd take 5 different exposures when you're shooting the scene, but I forgot to do that for that particular shot). Then I tone-mapped the image and saved the output. Voila.

Here's the original (by the way, the EXIF is intact in this one):

Versus the "fake" HDR version:

If istockphoto rejects it for my portfolio, I'll post the full size version.

I feel really bad

I couldn't help myself. My thieving right clicking paw scooped that up so fast for my new desktop background ... my old wallpaper didn't have a chance to say goodbye.

Hey, all I ever said was "I didn't alter the colors in any way," which just so happens to be completely true.

Well, if the HDR PP was simply part of Serial's artistic vision when he pressed the shutter, then some ethical theories would consider this to be a great photo that's benefited from a normal part of the digital workflow.

I'll only say that I like it.

Did you only increase/decrease brightness in Photoshop? Like -60, -30, +30 and +60 kind of?

Nah, I actually adjusted the levels to simulate over and under exposure. You have to adjust the midtones with the darks and the lights to get it to work in a semi-decent manner.[thumbup]
