Congrats on the purchase! The contrast, colors and sharpness innate in most L glass makes these lenses particularly spoiling for many people. All I can say is that I hope you like to keep dishing out the big bucks because you've passed the point of no return!

L lenses are weather sealed for a reason, put a plastic bag round your camera and get out there.

Are you serious? Can you just take an L'er and walk around with it in soaking rain?
I thought weather proof means a few rain drops won't hurt it, but give it a walk in the rain?

It depends on the L lens - not all of them are weather sealed.

yeah but my question is Would a WS L lens survive a good 'dive' into, say, a heavy rain?

Technically yes, it should do, - although unless you also have a weather sealed camera body, then the weak link will be the camera/lens join.

I've used my D1x and 24-85mm in pretty heavy rain before and it has been fine. The body is weather sealed but the lens is not. I try to care for my equipment as little as I need to [rofl].

Well I rather not risk the Camera in the rain even thou the 17-40mm might be proper weather sealed the 400D is not and for that reason only goes out when it dry, which to be honest in the UK in winter is not very often.[thumbdown]

I really want a clear cold frosty morning then head down to my local Canal.

GOod buy L series lens are fantastic, you never know they are soo good until you try them. I was using a sigma 24-70 f2.8 chepa lens and it was good, but hten bought the canon 24-70 F2.8 L and WOW.

so now i have
- 24-70 F2.8 L
- 70 - 200 F2.8 L
- 24-105 F4 L

for my Canon EOS 1ds MK2 & 1d MK2 N

i'm a nikon guy. i'm not bashing the lens or any L glass, but what is the difference between this L lens and a cheap F4 zoom lens?

i mean F/4 for that focal length isn't anything to write home about. good nikon glass is fast glass. cheap nikon glass is slow. F4 isn't fast, so why does it get the L designation?

again, i don't know hardly anything about canon glass. i'm just looking for clarification.

First up the build quality is second to none.

Barrel doesn't extend, really fast AF very very quiet to

It Weatherproof thou that not much use on my 400D as that isn't

It fits both crop and full frame bodies.

Optically wise it's alot better than the cheaper EF/ EF-S lenses most copies are usually pin sharp from wide to zoom contrast & colour is alot better than most of the none L class ,but you can come across bad copies.

even thou it only F4 it still pretty decent in low light not had it hunt on me yet but i have my Siggy 24-70mm F2.8 for low light stuff, 17-40mm is mainly my walkabout outside lens.

Its all about the quality of the lens elements, and the colour rendition / contrast + sharpness.

Many Canon L lens are the same F-stop across the whole focal length of the lens - something that "consumer" grade lenses are usually not.

Faster Canon lens are possible (and exist), but they are heavier, bigger, and more expensive.

All of this is, of course, aside from the fact that competing companies do have glass that is - for the money - just as good and in many cases better for consumers. Sigma's EX line, for example, is known for its high quality, and primes like the 300mm HSM APO is known to be very close to its Canon counterpart for all practical uses at only a fraction of the cost.

For most, the decision to buy L lenses is made by the pocketbook, but there are advantages of going L.
