Well, as far as cleaning the picture up that you already have, I am not sure how to do that, but in terms of preventing the grain and increasing the colors, I would DECREASE your ISO on the digital camera and change the shutter speed to something faster like 1/120 or faster. Try these out!

The original image as you posted is massive, and also full of JPEG artifacts.

Whats the final size in pixels that you need (I'm assuming you don't want it this full resolution ) - or do you?

Let me know, and I'll have a bash as cleaning it up a bit

about all that can be done with this particular image, it to reduce the iso noise & jpeg artifacts, and a tad of Gaussian blur, but this only softens the image.
To try to sharpen it will only pronounce the bad effects of the iso noise & jpeg artifacts.

here's a quick attempt (clickable)>

Just as a desktop background 1280X1024, I've chopped a bit off to fit the desktop but the graininess is just real poor, I didn't take the picture, just thought it real peaceful looking.

Here is my best effort.

Resized to 1280x1024. A couple of passes with Noise Ninja, some levels adjust, and a small amount of gaussian blur to hide the final bit of noise.

You won't get it sharp though - if you want it sharper, then you'll see the noise

I've had a go too. chrisinthesun20 is absolutely right about the tradeoff between smoothing and retaining sharpness/detail, the artifacts are just too strong.

Wow, thanks chrisinthesun20 and Lugole, massive improvement to the original, I miss used the word sharpen, when I said sharper I just meant to get rid of the bluring graininess in the picture and these are perfect, definately didn't expect anything like that, on me desktop now [thumbup].
