Default Powershot A610 a good camera?
I'm heading on a trip to Cuba next week and I want to take some nice pictures when I'm there. I've been thinking of getting another digicam to replace my shitty old HP 2.1MP crap camera, but want something with some customizability so I can take some good shots.

I'm not heading into the DSLR thing yet, but I know a bit about photography and want to be able to specify things like shutter priority and aperture size.

I don't have a lot of money to spend, but I'm a little torn between the Canon A530, A540, and A610 (I'm partial to Canon because friends have had good success with them overall). The 530 is about $250 CDN, but doesn't have Av or Tv settings. The 540 is a 6MP and does have the better settings, but is about $400, a little high for me.

The A610 looks like it's better than both, costs a little less than the 540, but is a little harder to find.

Can anyone with experience with these cameras let me know if these are worth purchasing, or recommend a similar camera with good features?

I have the a620 and I think it is a great camera. There are so many different settings, Av, Tv, and full manual. 30 different shooting modes and the battery life is amazing. I went to Alaska with it and took about 250 pics on it and not once did I have to change the batteries. [yes]

I have the A510 and it's a great little PaS camera. It's helping me learn all the little functions as well, and can take quite good pics for a 3.2mp camera. I'd like to upgrade in the next year and have looked at the 610 as well

I ended up grabbing the A530 in the end (money being the big concern there) and a 512mb SD card (half price!).

Only used it a bit so far, but I like it. Waaaay better than the POS HP camera I used to have.

Hopefully I learn to use it properly before my trip so I can take a bunch of nice pictures to post here when I get back.[yes]

I got my a520 on clearance for $140 plus a 20% discount at the Staples I work at. I ended up paying only $160 for the camera, case, 512 memory card, and a 2 year warrenty

Save some money and get the A610. You wont need the extra MP unless you are doing poster prints or something crazy like that.

PS: I like the A610 as well, it's our Point and Shoot digital camera. I'm happy with the pictures it takes.
