IAC-2 INS Vishal to feature catapult-launch system

The 65000 ton Indian Aircraft carrier - 2 ( IAC-2) expected to be named INS Vishal is planned to be a catapult-launch system instead of a ski-jump. The Naval Design Bureau is expected to freeze the design by year end. This will mark Indian Navy's drifting away from STOBAR and STOVL modes.

In 2009, Navy issues a RFI on aircraft for deck-based operations. The mode of launch type was not mentioned. Information is sought for MiG-29K, Su-33, Dassault Aviation Rafale, F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, Boeing's F/A-18E/F Super Hornet, Saab's Sea Gripen concept and Eurofighter's Naval Typhoon (CATOBAR)concept. Rafale is capable of STOBAR launch and recover with modification.

A catapult carrier can use a modified Su-33, the F/A-18, F-35C or the Rafale.

Northrop Grumman has pitched E-2 Hawkeye to the Indian navy since 2005 and offered help with concept and integration of a steam catapult on the new carrier. Boeing is scheduled to make presentations to the Indian navy later this year on the V-22 Osprey, both as a utility aircraft and a modified AEW platform.
