The iconic rocket court in Srirangapatna of ‘Tiger of Mysore’, Tipu Sultan, which designed and fired the world’s first war rocket almost 250 years ago against British army during the Anglo-Mysore wars in the 1790s, is to be converted to rocket museum. Duke of Wellington, Arthur Wellesley, almost retreated during the fourth Mysore war because of the rockets. London's Royal Artillery Museum currently displays someof the siezed rockets. The rockets were Iron-cased rockets, weighing more than 12 pounds each, mounted a 10-ft bamboo pole and had a range of nearly half a mile. The rockets were manufactured at Taramandal Pet.
Dr W. Selvamurthy Chief Controller and Distinguished Scientist from DRDO will study the monument and submit a report to the government. Former President Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam has special interest in the project. |
