Default Average Sin-sod?
After many good answers regarding sin-sod between a thai man and a foreign girl; i now have a new question

If it becomes a reality that the thai man pays the sin-sod for the foreign lady, how should the foreign family decide the amount of money he should pay?

Is there any average amount when paying the sin-sod? How much do guys usually pay? And what kind of factors decides how much a sin-sod should be?

OK, the more HISO, the more sin sid.
Are you well educated and demand high pay if you were to work? Up to 500,k baht.
That means more than if you have no education and have to work in the fields for 100 baht a day. 10k baht.

and if you are over 35 or 40 then you are not worth as much as a 25 year old of the same class, with no children will bring the price up some.

If you are from an entertainment venue then you will be worth a lot less to a Thai, some farang will pay top dollar but not a Thai.

So it just comes down to what you are and what you do .

It really really depends!

Depending on the family, but a lot of families these and especially Thai-Chinese give the dowry back straight after the marriage ceremony. Keeping to tradition its just called 'show' money.

Sometimes, the mother will only take some of the dowry and give the left back.

If the man is marrying into a wealthy family, where he is gonna get a lot of inheritance when the parents kick the bucket, then a huge dowry (not given back) is asked for.

The actual meaning of the word for 'to marry' in Thai does in fact translate as 'to make a party' (between 2 sides). So, if the man is asked to pay a dowry, then he will be wanting to know what he is gonna get in return ie...a car/land/small business etc....

A lot of foreigners are couple suckers for rural families which lie to them that the man has to pay a big dowry for some girl. They are scamming cheats.

The dowry should really only be paid for an unmarried girl, not a divorcee etc... But sometimes, a small sum of 'Hai Kiart' (paying honour to mum) is appreciated.

Again as for foreigners they often pay through there noses for some women who has been married three times before and has five kids! Again, complete suckers!

BTW:

Giving a dowry which is kept, is NOT a truly a Thai tradition but a Chinese one. Before the mass migration of the Chinese to Thailand, the tradition was that the parents of the girl would give the dowry back on the first birthday of their first child. The dowry was stashed away as a kind of 'security' for the child.
So, for any foreigners who are told by some bar-girl that giving a big dowry is part of Thai tradition is just completely lying!

In response to FiP. Ive known quite a few very decent Farang women married to decent Thai men - and no, they didn't pay any dowry (from what I gathered anyway)

From what I understand, The roundeye woman used to have to furnish a dowry to get some dude to marry em,, wonder why that went outta style??

Coarse I wouldn't marry another one even if she gave me a new V10 Viper.

My best friend and 3 of his brothers all married to different farang women (long story, but it was love they say). None of them paid sin soht. Years later they are all separated from their farang wives. First, they all come from Chiang Rai and didn't have much money to give at the time if they had to pay. Second, their wives were average to well to do here in the states and anything they would have given their wives would have been a mere pittance and would have been mistaken a joke.

A Thai man paying sin soht to a farang I haven't heard of, but maybe it could happen if he married to a poorer person in another country.
