Bhoori,

There is a subtle but very important difference between W. H. Auden's second statement and yours. Auden was an important poet as well as a respected critic. But rather than split hair over that, can we use this thread to post our impressions of a Tamil book that we have read?

This is outside Auden's guidelines and is more a single reader's perspective that Mani is referring to in his footnote.

I read Ramanujar by Indra Parthasarathy recently. It is in drama format.Overall, I liked it as a good attempt at developing a relatively rare genre in contemporary Tamil lit.

For some reason, I perceived that Ramanujar comes out more as a missionary trying to envelop everyone into his faith rather than as a revolutionary against orthodoxy.

Can I have the benefit of different perspectives?

Ramji,

What do you think an author should do? Should he attempt to interpret an historical figure based on available evidence or should he attempt to project modern values on an historical figure? Authors have done both. As Prof. Sam Sankaran once mentioned in the Tamil.net, Ramanujar may have been a prisoner of his time and may have gone only as far as he can get away with.

I think I. Pa. does not conclude one way or the other. He just narrates the events and lets us come to our conclusion. I came to the conclusion that Ramanujar was neither a revolutionary nor a missionary. He was more of a reformer. That is perhaps why he was limited in what he could accomplish and had to compromise.

I do agree that it is refreshingly different and walks a fine line between patronizing and sermonizing.

Dear friends,

We are still thinking of Jayakanthan, Sujata etc. Have we identified any new writers who will be taking our great Tamil literature to greater heights.

Recently, I happened to read Jayakanthan's new series in Makkal Osai, a weekly in Malaysia. I am shocked that the writing style is not impressive at all.

Jeevaa: In a discussion thread like this, you are going to find people who do not agree with and who would passionately argue with you about their disagreements. (For example, you and I have strong differences about the value of Kalki's works.) Calling such people names is certainly going beyond the line. The only reason we all visit these pages is to have a discussion that will stimulate our thinking process and to get introduced to works of importance. As I said in my earlier posting, tearing into such participants just provokes them and does not serve any useful purpose.

I had just finished my earlier posting and then saw what you had written. I was a little annoyed and what I wrote about you starting a flame war itself was a little provocative. If I have annoyed you, I apologize. But I strongly beleive that people like Mani and Jeyamohan (and you too) are quite valuable to these threads; and we should all take it as our hypothesis that everybody who writes honestly; and we should adopt the convention that only their opinions should be harshly refuted and we shouldnt attribute ulterior motives to them.

I will change your second point to read persuade to change the readers understanding of an author. Whether I undervalued or overvalued the author is immaterial.

how many tamil authors get this kinda attention from readers like jeyamohan? may be jeyakanthan, sujatha and balakumaran?many authors are just there filling pages for many years and no one really cares.
