The odour of dirty socks can be used to lure mosquitoes into a deadly trap before they can spread malaria, a US and Canadian-funded researcher based in Africa said on Wednesday. Dr. Fredros Okumu, of the Ifakara Health Institute in Tanzania, discovered through an experiment that mosquitoes were more attracted to the odour of filthy feet than to live humans sleeping in the same area.
Rather confusing this report. It gives me the impression that the filthy feet did not belong to the live humans sleeping in the area. Have the filthy feet distanced themselves from the living human beings? More important is, it’s an interesting way to fight malaria. 'Smelly socks could help fight malaria' - Hindustan Times |

Hindustan Times has probably been bribed by US-Canadian-Tanzanian socks makers to print the story and sell MNC dirtied socks, mosquito traps and medicines in India. Malaria is best addressed by clean surroundings with no stagnant pools of water. The best way to keep mosquitoes out of a house/flat is to add a screened door and screens to windows. Mosquito nets are the safest for babies and children. The worst toxic chemicals that are mindlessly used are the Aldrin based so called goodnights - The toxic chemical is banned in Japan and EU but for reasons we all know has a hey day with kids in India. The side effects are headaches and respiratory problems. When you look at the dead mosquitoes you will know what your lung cells are being subjected to. Aldrin killed mosquitoes backs on the floor and all legs up. It is nerve poison to it.
Mosquitoes eventually develop immunity to chemicals - more and more needs to be applied. In recent years there are reports the a few old mosquitoes pretend to be stunned when new brands are brought in, and shake a few legs and fly away. (personal communication from son of doctor) |

The HT report has a few racist tints when it implies than Tanzanians keep filthy socks lying around and also that they have filthy unwashed feet when they go to sleep. It also speaks very poorly of a so called funded health centre permitting filth of any kind. And worse, what kind of researchers are these that instead of primary focus on hygiene, protecting the patients, and getting rid of the goddamn bugs go gathering data on number of mosquitoes biting the poor patients.

More news on smelly Socks for you. I don’t know if Melinda and Bill Gates are using their own smelly socks to fight malaria? If I happen to bump into them I will certainly ask. Rajpriya Bill and Melinda Gates to fight malaria in Africa using smelly socks Newscast Media AUSTIN, Texas — A Tanzanian doctor has developed an innovative trap that attracts and kills mosquitoes with the smell of dirty socks. Dr. Fredros Okumu and his scientific team at the Ifakara Health Institute in Tanzania have learned that smelly socks attract four times more mosquitoes than a human being. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation together with Grand Challenges Canada, are funding the project in order to fight malaria in Africa. Dutch scientist Dr. Bart Knols first discovered mosquitoes were attracted to foot odor by standing in a dark room naked and examining where he was bitten, said Dr. Fredros Okumu, the head of the research project at Tanzania’s Ifakara Health Institute. But over the following 15 years, researchers struggled to put the knowledge to use. Then Okumu discovered that the stinky smell — which he replicates using a careful blend of eight chemicals — attracts mosquitoes to a trap where they can be poisoned. The odor of human feet attracted four times as many mosquitoes as a human volunteer and the poison can kill up to 95 percent of mosquitoes, he said. Okumu received an initial grant of $100,000 to help his research two years ago. Now the project has been awarded an additional $775,000 by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Grand Challenges Canada to conduct more research on how the traps should be used and whether they can be produced affordably. The current traps are expensive prototypes but Okumu hopes to produce affordable traps that can be sold for between $4 and $27 each. He said they hoped to develop the devices so they would work at the ratio of 20 traps for every 1,000 people. The “Smelly Socks Project” is one of many innovative projects that Bill Gates and his foundation are funding to fight tropical diseases. Below are some innovative ideas that have been funded. To keep feeding their innovation engine with creative ideas, Bill Gates Foundation continues to seek new applicants – especially those from developing countries whose direct experience can guide and tailor solutions to be most suitable for those most in need. dear rajpriya,

AND UNETHICAL experiments with human beings in the third world. Can you find volunteers to test Dr. Bart Knols observation in Gernmany or EU, UK or USA with dengue and Malaria causing mosquito bites? There is definitely more than what meets the eye and nose. It stinks of unethical practices and wanting to sell Japanese chemicals to kill mosquitoes in the third world. What really was being experimented is - how do mosquitoes find humans? Can mosquitoes see in the dark? can they sense body heat? Can they smell human body odour? And what is body odour? And what are the chemicals constituting body odour?. It is generally known that they can sense very minute quantities of CO2 we breathe out. The chemicals are human produced. So where do you find the suckers? Tanzania and Africa or next if we are not cautious the tribals in the nilgiris. There is no Malaria in UK or EU. |

This research seems to disturb you beyond my imagination. You have counter arguments for almost anything and everything. [when you introduced your self to this forum with “Me and My Perspectives In Environment Management” you said I upload many of my writings on a website and 35k guys read them. God knows why?] How did you find out 35k guys are reading your stuff. I also wanted to know on what website you were uploading your stuff. I did not receive any answer. If 35k guys were reading your writings why would you think I should not read them? If you are a person with Perspectives to Manage Environment do me a favour -you should be using Environment friendly language. So far your Anti research on most things frightens me about whats more to come? |
