 Is he a con artist?
While hanging around Sanam Luang park,a stranger introducing as thai teacher waiting for his students visiting Grand Palace approched me and suggested I visit Wat Sawat(Sukhothai Rd),Thai Export Centre(Phitsanulok Rd).Wat Sang Wat and Golden Mountain.
The theme:-"All these places open only once a year,free entry,no need pay" Says I must must not take those yellow tuk-tuk,only those blue red. I said I can walk to all these places on my map but insist must go by tuk-tuk,so he hailed one for me. Also said you pay only Baht40 whole trip till back hotel and teach me "ronoy" to tell the driver. I'm still not sure whether this good samaritan is genuine or not. |

this is the most frequent scam in Bangkok. I don't know anyone who hasn't experienced it in one form or another.

thanks Betti,on arrival at first Wat,there was a paying booth outside the Wat.Seems to be handling the parking area,not the main entrance.Since I was told it's free,I told tuk-tuk driver I'm not going in.Proceed to next.You know what,driver ask me wait while he go for a drink.
Next,the export centre turns out to be a gems gallery like that in Chiangmai. |

There is a woman scammer who operates in the Skytrain stations. She approaches Farang women who have the signs of being a tourist, eg maps in hand, camera, bum bag around the waist etc. She starts a conversation by complimenting them on their beautiful skin and hair. Where do you come from?? etc. etc and then suggests a quick tour of the area to show the mark around. A lady friend of mine from South Australia was approached by the same woman twice during her holiday here recently.

First time I came to Thailand, i thought tuk tuks were a Thailand icon. now I kow jai, They are all crooked. They, and their touts. When you realise where they are taking you, and bail out, you are left finding other transport. It should be a warning on all traveller websites. Shame Thailand. Shame

My mom and I went to the Grand Palace on the eve of the king's birthday. When we got out, we heard someone talking to us in Thai, asking us if we've bought tickets.
A man dressed in a blue shirt and jeans then came up to us and made small talk with us. He took a look at our tickets and said we could go to Vimanmek and another place of attraction for free as the entrance fees are included in our ticket. He seemed friendly and said he was providing us with free information.  Next, he asked if we've been to the 'big Buddha' and Thai factory. He recommended we take a tuk tuk to these interesting places as it's too far to walk. Then the next minute, a tuk-tuk driver came up but we rejected his offer, saying we were going to grab a bite. In the end, we managed to escape unscathed. I forgot to mention the price for taking us on a ride was 40B.

Why is it many tuk-tuk drivers think they are F1 drivers?  In Buriram Province some 'tuk-tuks' are electric golf cars. And others are like a motorcycle at the front rather than the more usual style in Bangkok. David |

I don't know why anyone would even take a tuk tuk anywhere, except maybe once on your first visit to Thailand. (Why is it many tuk-tuk drivers think they are F1 drivers?  )

I thought I'd share a nice tuk-tuk story...they're not all crooks, right?
This summer I bought about 100 books that didn't fit in my luggage and needed to be shipped back. I was way down a little soi, alone in my sister's apartment. (she was at work). I started to carry the books and couldn't move them all. Finally, I went up to the main soi and flagged down a tuk tuk driver. He walked with me down the little soi, helped me carry all the books, loaded up his tuk tuk and drove me to the main post office -- about a 15 minute ride. At the post office, he helped me load my books up the stairs and over to the counter. The charge? 30 Baht. (needless to say...he got a big tip!) |

A pity the tourists are first confronted with the lowest common denomenator. Them and the taxis. Get past that, and thailand is a beautiful place

Taxis and cleaner, cooler and most times cheaper. I never get a tuk tuk. |

Yup. Every new tourist should take a ride in a tuk-tuk once-if only to teach them NEVER to do it again! Just my thoughts... M |

Well If I'm approached by any one, I don't care if there genuine, I just say I'm not interested, as I plan for every thing and I don't want to risk being scammed by something I did not plan for.

Not always true. I'd approached countless tourists who look lost. So if a chinese looking man who speaks english approaches you while you're looking at your map, it might be me.

I have only been "scammed" once in Thailand (many times in India though).
Myself and a couple of friends were standing outside a temple in Chiang Mai when a man approached us. He asked what we were doing and as my friend was short of underwear,said we were looking for some pants. I can help you he said, come in my car. So,as we had nothing better to do,we played along knowing full well what was going to happen.At every stop, i.e gem factory, arab shop etc. we would go in and ask all the staff for pants and disreguard all of the, I must say, beautiful items..The man would get his "calling in" money and we had a good tour of the shops. When he took us back to the centre of town, we asked him to park by a policeman (that scared him!) He asked us for some petrol money but we declined as he had not found any suitable underwear for my friend. Now, when a tuk-tuk or taxi driver approaches me, if I have the time,I will engage in a series of nonsensical questions until he either gets the idea I dont want to go anywhere or we end up laughing. I have only had good experiences with tuk-tuk/taxi drivers,maybe its because I am clear where I want to go or maybe its my attitude. Who knows? |

SCAM ALERT........Genuine Thai people will rarely ever approach a farang in the street. If a friendly stranger comes up to you and tries to make conversation, he/she is after one thing ..................your cash!!

well at least it is true that the Grand Palace ticket is also valid for Wimanmek. or, it definitely was a couple of years ago. nice place to visit.

yep scam
dont go anywhere with anyone in bangkok,get your information 1st, of where you want to go, then get a local tuk tuk or one recommended by your hotel agree where you want to go and how long you want your driver for, and agree a price,arrange for the whole day price then sorted no hassle's no problem, many guys are happy to make a days wage on one tourist, easy for you easy for them, another lazy day thailand,, |
