I don't think it is just a question about Thai people.
If you go to Spain, Italy or Greece in the summer season, very few of the locals wear sunglasses.
Its mostly tourists who wear them. Its almost part of the holiday uniform.
And interestingly enough, I have noticed Thai people wear them while they themselves are tourists around places like Koh Lanta and Koh Phi Phi.

Why I wear sunglasses.

1. I don t want anyone to see my terrible face while I am sleeping on the bus.

2. I don t want to give my eyes contact on whatever my reasons are: depends

3. I am on holiday as a tourist

4. I am driving my car

5. It is a very sunny day and I hurt my eyes.

6. I don t want to see you but I have no choices.Wearing sunglasses could resist me from situation that I don t need any conversation with anyone

7. I don t have it, it was broken, stolen, ect.

one thing you really have to be careful with when wearing sunglasses: it has to have real UV protection. if your sunglasses are dark, it doesn't mean that they are automatically protecting your eyes from UV. on the contrary, the dark lenses mean that your pupils will dilate more, letting in even more harmful rays. personally, I would avoid cheap sunglasses from the market and only buy from a proper shop.

Feel free to ask "experts": "why do you think that?" Sometimes people make jokes about observations they have made and sometimes, not always, they welcome being questioned over their observations. If not, you have made a point that they are not experts.

There is nothing in that article that says contact lenses let more light into your eyes... in fact the only reference is "Soft contact lenses provide very little protection" which is in the context of whether glasses provide protection or not.

Hoisted by my own petard, I see.

The penalty for being lazy in my own postings. However a small amount of deductive reasoning, from the information provided in the article I cited, would suggest that my statement is verifiable.

When I was being fitted for my soft contact lenses, so I wouldn't have to wear my prescription plastic lens glasses, my Optometrist advised me to wear a good pair of sunglasses as more light (UV rays being in the light spectrum) would enter my eyes. So yes, I did neglect to mention that my statement was relative. By the way, I do have very deep, dark, baby blues.

Someone taught me this about Thai not wearing / wearing sunglasses.

1. Normal day by day practice Thai don’t wear them unless they want to hide something.

2. It is normal to wear when going to tour, beach, driving and If you are too handsome.

3. Most Thais if they wear sunglasses it will just go down a bit just like my avatar.

Peace.

(P.S #3 is a joke I invented only Khatot)

I have to wear sunglasses, and good ones at that, because I wear contact lenses, which let in a lot more light into my eyes and is not healthy for them.
I experienced the same thing when I tried contact lenses. I gave up with the eye itching, watering and constant sunglasses to relieve such and returned joyfully to glasses.

Hi

If like my wife, doesn,t wear sunglass's that much because she is always loosing them LOL. but with all the smog and haze you don't really need them. I think the umbrella's act as sunglass's also to block the sun. But here is states in Idaho, sunglass's are mandatory the sun is so bright and it is so clear .My Thai wife never goes out with out sunglass's

a little know fact Seattle Washinton USA sells more sunglass's per capita than any other
US city But Seattle is know for being one of the rainest citys in America. when the rains stop and the sun comes out it is so bright with the sun refecting off the wet streets you have to run ijna buy sunglass's to see.

I never thought about whether or not Thais wear sunglasses before I started reading this thread. So now I've been thinking.
My father-in-law always wore prescription sunglasses when outdoors. Mr X wore sunglasses, as did his brothers. I think a lot of Thais I knew who had lived abroad used sunglasses. I don't know if they realized it was more comfortable, or if they thought it was cool to wear them. My sisters-in-law used umbrellas, just as many other Thai women do, or at least did a few years ago.
Just for the record, my eyes are almost black, yet they are super sensitive to light and I keep sunglasses for cloudy days and sunglasses for sunny days.

Yes I have always wondered that, When I had my recent trip to Indonesia, I found many Indonesians ware sunglasses, but not Thai's. When I was in Thailand my former girlfriend wondered why I always wear sunglasses, I only take them off when my photo was taken. I think it could be a cultural or fashion thing.
Also I would like to note, when I was at my former girlfriends graduation ceremony, I was told by a police officer I had to remove my sunglasses as the Crown Prince was about to arrive, it's got something to do with Royal protocol, maybe this is why Thai's don't wear sunglasses incase a Royal drives past.

Seems like in most places in Asia it's either a fashion statement, as others say, or they are worn by rich and famous people when they are convicted of a crime and have to turn up at court.
It is a well-known fact that if we do something wrong or are guilty, we want to avoid eye-contact.

In Oz, where the light is extremely harsh, I wear sunglasses pretty much whenever I am outdoors. The light is much softer in Thailand and I can mostly get by with just my usual glasses.

Default Why Don't Thais Wear Sunglasses?
The only Thai I've ever seen wearing them the whole time I've been here was one girl on a train. This is the hottest city in the world, so why does no-one wear sunglasses?

Most private cars in Thailand have tinted windows. Mine does and I can't drive with sunglasses on otherwise I can't see a thing.
This and also most Thai who're so scare of the sun will be spending time in air-cooling shopping malls most of the time if they choose to go "outdoor". So I don't see the need for sun glasses. I think its still fairly common to spot young people wearing sun glasses in trendy venues like Siam Square and Paragon though.

Most Thais don't have a bridge big enough for the sunglasses to fit on

It is a good point. I can only presume their eyes are not so sensitive to light as most Westerners. Quite often I would like to wear sunglasses walking around town here but it makes me look like a tourist. No-one here wears sunglasses at all.

I've found lots of Thai people wearing sunglasses, I've never actually noticed a lack of them. I'll keep an eye out next time though.
