The only Thai I've ever seen wearing them the whole time I've been here was one girl on a train. This is the hottest city in the world, so why does no-one wear sunglasses? David |

Seems like in most places in Asia it's either a fashion statement, as others say, or they are worn by rich and famous people when they are convicted of a crime and have to turn up at court. * since maggy thatcher's not my type, i hope that word is not being misunderstood. |

The atmosphere in many parts of LoS is so thick with smog that it filters the sun out and reduces the glare, avoiding the need for sunnies. Here in NZ the air is very clear and I can see the hills 50km away as I am writing this. Also the big hole in the ozone layer over Antarctica and NZ makes the sun much stronger so, you have to use sunscreen a lot. I have never worn sunglasses though. I think Thais and people all over the world wear sunglasses more for the cool(?) effect than to reduce the glare on their eyes.

Most Thais don't have a bridge big enough for the sunglasses to fit on some incidents may considered as a fact but should have suported reasons and thoese reasons are truely strong enough. |

I have to wear sunglasses, and good ones at that, because I wear contact lenses, which let in a lot more light into my eyes and is not healthy for them. |

Well it's about time Thai's started wearing sunglasses and with a UV filter built in. In Australia it is mandatory for sunglasses to have UV protection, even in cheap sunglasses. Thailand has a bad habit of producing fakes, of good quality brands, these of course have no standards and probably have no UV protection.
I always wear sunglasses during the day while out side or driving, because I don't want cataracts or eye damage latter in life, it's got nothing to do with fashion. Another note, the pollution in Bangkok or even clouds on a rainy day filters very little UV light, just use a lighter shade of sunglasses if there to dark for the conditions. |

Feel free to ask "experts": "why do you think that?" Sometimes people make jokes about observations they have made and sometimes, not always, they welcome being questioned over their observations. If not, you have made a point that they are not experts. I know what "sense of humour " is, Thanks for your suggestion |

I'm lazy tonight and don't feel like typing the physiological reasons, so instead I spent 45 seconds to google this. |

I have not read this whole thread, only this page and my connection to this site is so poor that I will not go back and start at the front.
But I am light complected [white] and have light, and now thin, hair and blue eyes and I have never worn sunglasses, when at wotk or on my motorcycle that I rode daily in the states when I could. I have lived here for a few years and do not wear them here either, altho my prescriptions are photogrey. But of coarse I am just a kid and might take to wearing them when I get older. |

Why Don't Thais Wear Sunglasses? Simply cuz Thais are so nice, beautiful and don’t need to wear such an outfit. Look to their eyes and smiles you will forget all about UV. also you will forget about the misery of your life. |

More UV light does go into your eyes when you wear poor quality sunglasses because your pupils widen and let more UV light in, but contact lenses don't suck light into your eyes, they just adjust the focal point of the light that already enters your eye. I mean that's just physics. But yes I have read that people with blue eyes should wear sunglasses because their eyes let in more UV light than brown ones.
Anyway, we're going a bit , hehe. |
