Perhaps after Paul's post we need to deal with the issue that Thailand is just a little bit appearance conscious. However, what that mostly means for tourists is dressing modestly and conservatively (I always wear long pants and usually wear polo shirts). For men like me it also means changing your shirt about three times a day and using truckloads of deodorant and talc.

I'm confident that if you are relaxed about the curiosity many Thai people have towards African people and can ride out that initial potentially uncomfortable bit, you will have a great time visiting Thailand. Being prepared in advance will help you for sure.

Dirtshultz,

I once traveled in Bangkok and nearby provinces with a group of black African friends with children. In the hotel they got royal treatment from the staff (I am not sure if it's because they stayed in a suite in a 5-star hotel). However, when we went out to shop or tour around the locals tended to stare at them, especially at the intricate braids of the ladies. They were not rude at all, though, to my friends. I guess the natives were just curious.

HI

no worry but the Thai's are not politicaly correct.
they have no problem asking how old you are
or saying that you are fat LOL
it is not done in a malicious or derogotory way
they just call them like they see them.
they always seem to point out that I am bald."like i don't know"

so I am sure you will get stared at and if you are really dark
they may mention it. but do not take anything personal.
Thai's are very accepting

My thai wife as many Africans in her ESL class. she is always telling me how
black they are but she also says they are so beautiful.

Be sure and make sure they know you are English.
many Indians are dark skinned but the Thai's aren't too fond of them.

Go you will have a great time
