Hi Bigbubba
There is another way to send stuff to thailand, one you will need to work at a little. Most Thai's living in the US understand the duty cost with sending things back to Thailand, and for a Friend, are willing to take something and pack it in their bags when flying back for a visit. Once in Thailand, your gf could meet up with them, or they can mail it to her within the Thai post system( all addressed in Thai). Many of our friends do this for us, and now with My trip coming soon, I am sending things back for them. The plus is you get to meet more Thais in your area and build a support system for when your gf comes to visit. Good Luck Duckman And yes, this information might be a little late, but I hope it helps. |

I've sent a couple packages of various items to my girl in Udon. I send them U.S. Postal Service Priority Mail (big bucks) so they will arrive before the clothes are out of style (hehe). She has to pay to get them, why? Is it duty on the items? Is it based on the declared value of the package or the weight? She's asked me to stop sending stuff and I'm sure it's because of this. I know she likes what I send because she proudly wears something I sent during our video chats. I've offered to reimburse her for what she's paid and she wont let me. I think it's crummy that a Thai citizen would have to pay duty on a gift. Is there any way to "pre-pay" this unfair fee?

Most countries levy import duty on parcels received, in the UK we have to pay it on anything over the value of 18GBP (about US$30). I don't know about the US Postal system but anything I send from the UK I use just regular mail and it arrives in rural Isaan within 5 or 6 days. But my wife has never had to pay to receive anything that I have sent to her.

Thai custom also levies import duty for items sent from abroad. I am not certain how much is the cut off but the number of 2000 baht comes to mind. The recipient of the package will have to pick it up at the post office and pay the duty. Rates vary, luxury items such as perfume, cosmetics, clothings can be as high as 20-50% of the value.

I have a lot of stuff sent from US.
Vitamins and suppliments, cooking utenils, anything I want and can't get here, which is quite a list, and some duty is charged and sometimes not, but nothing ever makes in under 2 weeks and some a month and all is shipped USPS International Priority Express and usually size and weight considered is the Flat Rate Box, 12"x 12"x 6". for $35. I couldn't see shipping cloths over here as nothing is made in US and about anything you can get there that would be suitable to wear here is sold here at 1/8 the price. I was in China for awhile and had a girl friend that was always wanting me to buy stuff for my daughter and ship it home, and I had a hard time explaining to her so she could understand that damn near everything in the US was made here and they alredy had it there, the people could not get it in their minds that I had came from the industrial giant and got off the plane already wearing Chinese made pants, shirt and deck shoes and I even had to show some the "MADE IN CHINA" tags in the stuff. If you want to send her something nice, something she can use and get some good out of,, send her an ATM card and PIN to your bank account, she will get some use from that. |

I have spent a lot of time here since the early 60s when that little thing was going on in Nam, and came here often to party for my month ashore when I was working in the Arabian gulf area, I have not drank in 27 years so none of that anymore but I have never been screwed over since I have came here and lived in Chiang Mai twice and mostly at a home in Nongua and have driven many times to Nong Khai for a crossing into Vientiane for tourist visas and since giving that up have driven 2 times to BKK and 5 trips to CM for extensions, I was charged a fine once in Phetsanulok for no seat belt use and at the cop shop was charged 100 baht, and caught at a speed trap at Uteratidit[sp] at 135 on radar in a 90 zone was fined 200 baht which I paid with a postal money order and my license was mailed back to me.
I have never ordered Ice delivered because we have electric fridge so no need for ice delivery unless we were going to mix drinks and you can not complain about be taken a little if you are a drunk, I never did. I did receive a package at the Post office and was asked to come in, it weighed 40 pounds and they could not haul it out on a motcy and wanted to know what was in it, I told them that it was stainless steel cookware with 9 thin sheets of copper encapsulated in the bottoms and I had paid $595.00 for it online and they wanted to see it, I showed them, the women Oohed about it, I took it out to my pickup and went home, but 1 time I was charged 200 baht duty on pharmacy supplements and only that one time and I have got about 12 shipments from that on line drug company. And I am a Swede so they do not mistake me for a Thai. |

Bigbubba, the higher value of the package you write down, the more your girlfriend has to pay to get it. It does not matter what the real value is. |

In the law's eyes it is a bad thing, it is illegal, fraud can be punishable with a prison sentence. I hope that's not happening after you letting your girl have all the access to all your financial things. LOL And i was talking about trust between lovers. I was just trying to say that trusting your lovers by letting them carry your ATM isn't a bad thing. |
