I've never had that problem, but when I have a big note, I buy some thing expensive and use the small change to buy something cheap.

In some shops in many countries, when you pay, the cashier will tell you, "You gave me one hundred dollars ( or whatever)" as she or he shows you your money. Like the suggestion above, you now reverse the practice by showing your money and saying, " I give you one hundred dollars."

I learned my lesson. I, myself, became a victim in a shop in Bkk last year where they claimed--all three sales ladies--against me, kon diow, that what I had given was a 500 baht note. I was 100 percent sure it was a 1000 baht note, since it was the last money in my wallet at that time. In my anger, I looked them in the eye and said slowly and emphatically in English ( they all spoke English): "Remember this. Everyday I will pray that you will always be poor".

Actually, I have had an experience of this working the other way. I once arrived in Bangkok, checked into my hotel, and went around the corner to the local Bank in a jet-lagged state.
I changed a travellers cheque and left the Bank. I was waiting to cross a busy road when the teller from the bank appeared at my elbow, asking me to return to the Bank.
It transpired she had paid me double of what she should have !

My experience was they always gave back wrong change. Sometimes less, sometimes more. I conclude that they're just bad in counting and not intentional. I worry too when I pass 1,000baht to the toll stations when I drive but they'd never short change me so far.

Then again, you mentioned bars and yes, its well known some bars especially those girly bars short change customers sometimes or like they always like to claim "I tot it tips!".

I experienced already before a "mistake" of a sales-woman in a shop in giving back money in the case of paying with a 1.000 Baht note.
The banknote disappears in the cash-register and the money paid back is as one has given a 500 Baht note. Afterwards no prove is there anymore.
Might be it happened already several times to me because sometimes I don't check careful enough.
Last night the same again in a very well known bar in Bangkok with two sister bars in Bangkok and Pattaya.
The same "mistake" and I was lost because the management was not very diplomatic saying that these are often made mistakes by the client and his staff does not cheat (I was not mentioning this): "see, the paid amount is showing at the slip, so you paid with 500 Baht". Furthermore there were right away 4 waitresses around to testify that I gave only 500 Baht.........

Do you have (had) problems in paying with 1.000 Baht??
Next time hold the 1000 baht note open, show it to the waitress, smile and and say "phom mii bai la phan khrab" " I have a 1000 baht note" (phan, or pun, if you don't speak much Thai, meaning 1 thousand) better still go armed with a pile of 100 & 500 baht notes and pay with them.

But then, by your own admission you "don't check careful enough" so perhaps you did pay with a 500 baht note.

well I think if you go to a bar or any other "dubious" place, you would want to make sure you have smaller denominations with you.
back home it is petrol stations where they constantly play these games. you would just *know* where you need to be careful.
I usually go to Rimping supermarket or 7-eleven to change a 1000-baht note. once I just bought a bar of chocolate or something, paid, took my bags and left. a minute later a young girl came running after me, bringing the 900-odd baht change that I had forgotten to take!

If I had this recurring problem, especially at a particular place, I might start jotting down the nine digit bill number beforehand.

I was on the Chiang Mai- Lampang bus one day and a guy hopped on at Lumphun and proferred the conductor a 1000Baht note. Every passenger on the bus got to hear what the denomination of that note was. : )

I had different experience, I paid with a 500 baht note, the cashier thought it was 1,000 baht. I insisted to return 500 baht to her, her face seemed to be tired and confused, she kept saying it was 1,000 baht, the next customer in line who saw me handing the money to her had to confirm I gave her 500 baht otherwise she wouldn't take 500 baht back.

10 years ago I paid by credit card, the store used old model of credit card machine, cashier had to key-in the number of amount paid. Mine was 3,xxx baht but the cashier added one more 0 and she didn't check it, just handed it to me to sign. I smiled while telling her to correct the amount, she apologized for her carelessness, before I left, she thanked me for not blaming her.

I understand that after long hours of working, they might be exhausted, easily making mistakes, distracted, some might stick to what they think which could be either right or wrong. Anyway, not everyone is honest, all good and bad people everywhere.
