I asked the Thai girls why such a rule, came a rather interesting and funny reply.

“We get married to Thai men after a few years will have mia noi (mistress), we will get divorced. Change to Mrs not good, difficult to find husband again.”

“If we get married to foreigner, maybe change to Mrs, because na, foreigner love wife mak mak, not playboy.”

My wife will oft tell me that a girl she doesn't like is a "butterfly", I've also heard her use the phrase "she not butterfly, she helicopter!"

Is that good?

Butterfly is usually used for girls and eel(playboy in english) for guys, as in Thai.

Yes, i've heard things about sin sod that it can be for a girl's security in case she gets divorced. I wonder why some women can still sue their husbands to get money after divorced, though.

Oooops, my ex-wife's mother had already spent the sinsod before she even got it, on an extension to the house.
I don't think that will be providing much security for her now. Though it probably does provide some protection from the rain.
LOL. Security from the elements is a basic need, per Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. So the sin sodt has covered that.

For that matter it also covers the next level, "need to belong". When the woman divorces she needs funds to get attractive to find someone who will ask her to belong to him.

Just kidding. Jerome, it's your fault! You tempted me!:

We use different words. Playboy is farrang word but in Thai "butterfly'' means basically the same thing, same idea.

Not really, she is implying the girl in question is larger than she should be.

Try speaking to the Kareoke girls… they all speak like that.

cannot believe i'm explaining this.. but, regarding my previous post, i was just trying to say that since the word playboy was originally from the west those karaoke girls' opinion: "farang guys love wife mak mak" is..really funny. Anyway, i don't have much chance to talk to all karaoke girls.

When a Thai woman get's married legally she automatically becomes a Mrs. after she get's divorced she can not change it back to Ms.

That's why it is very hard for a divorced Thai woman to find a husband again.

And that's what all the "Sin Sod" is about to have a future start help in case she get's divorced.
Really!?!? Now THAT'S something that I didn't know. Very interesting...

I have always campained for equal rights for both men and woman, and to me this is still a form of discrimination. It is every womans right to be called Mr or Sir if she wants to. It has always been my right to have the title of Prince, although now since my fathers death last year, my title is now "'King Paul"' for short, although my full title is much longer.

But usually for a Thai woman who is divorced it is very hard if not impossible to find a Thai husband again, even worth when she already has children.

That's why many divorced women try to find a Farang partner or end up somewhere else.

Financial security is a very big aspect.
