You are not kidding, It is said that you can get addicted to them things and I have seen some that are, and if they don't use em then their nose tissue will swell some.
I saw a guy in a bus terminal that he ran or owned and we were waiting for a bus at 0130 to BKK, and this dude watch the girl cashier, he look in the cash box often, and snorted on that inhaler and mined for nuggets with his fingers in his nose, snort menthol and mine some more, this went on for an hour, then he took money from the cash box and left, damn I was getting tired of watching that dude pick his nose.
But a long time ago the inhalers [VICK'S I believe] had a fiber thing like a cig filter inside that was saturated with Benzedrine and snorting that stuff does help congestion and sinus trouble, kids used to bust em open and swallow that filter thing with hot coffee, and get stoned.
I am an alkie and never liked speed so I never tried that.

I see.. So in short, It wouldn't be a problem I as a foreign nurse to work there? Ha ha...

Is there any rules or norms that certain family follow in order to have a better health or influence their health? Like, environment, food they eat, religion, any herbs usually taken?
Hi Jocelyn_88,

As some of the other posts have noted, most Thais are fairly firm believers in modern medicine. But by realization in the failure of modern Western medical method that considers each separate illness to be disassociated from other kinds of illness, or illness in general. For this reason, a patient who is systemically ill may be involved in repeated office visits for a variety of symptoms and treatments. In the end, the body can become so exhausted from prolonged treatment that "illness in general" is never resolved. And clearing up symptoms does not necessarily lead to cessation of illness. Often, illness will continue, though manifesting different symptoms. Many illnesses exhibit the same or similar symptoms. This fact is why many patients can be misdiagnosed, then prescribed treatments that do not work. The attempt at diagnosis then begins again, with accompanying treatments that may or may not clear up the symptoms. The patient may become bankrupt by the weight of expenses involved, or die from battling prolonged illness (such like poisoning the cells with chemotherapy kills not just the cancer, but also the healthy cells, and often the patient).

So! over 10 years ago, By Dr. Sathit (ดร.สาทิส อินทรกำแหง),Thai doctor who has been cancer ’s study and life experience in traditional cultures command observation and respect. So we have new way to make a change in condition or disease as ชีวจิต (Chi-va jit), a mix of modern strengths and knowledge of both traditional western and complementary holistic wisdom of the past manner. This new treatment way has acceptable by Thai Ministry of Public Health, Ministry of Health as “แพทย์ทางเลือก” (Alternative Medicine).

The foundation of Chi-va jit is about developing the ability to recreate our health, judgment and sensitivity. It was chosen as a philosophical way of understanding life as good health equates to vitality, wellness, peace, harmony, and balance. By understanding the applications of Ayurveda and Yin / Yang theory to all aspects of life, a person can achieve the balance so essential to a sense of wellbeing. We can learn to express ourselves, take care of our bodies, and nourish ourselves in a balanced way.

Instead of trying to identify the type of illness involved from symptoms the body manifests ,Chi-va jit views disease as a general condition of imbalance. It therefore assists the body to rebuild itself. In this way, the constitution/condition as a whole improves to the point that the immune system can successfully maintain health under almost any conditions of stress or exposure to disease micro-organisms. This is called natural immunity.

Chi-va jit is simply a lifestyle that goes way back to what our forefathers at, more traditional way of living and eating with nature and the environment we live in and living naturally in harmony with all things around us. Food is energy and helps us create and become who we are or as it has been said “You are what you eat”. This way heal physically by being aware how to create more balanced food and health practices that keep our strong, yet supple, in body and mind. Any repair we attempt to make in any part of ourselves, must also involve other parts. If we have a "physical problem" , there are also emotional, and energetic (spiritual) ways to solidify that healing.

The general concepts of health according to Chi-va jit are as follows:

1. Non-organic and animal protein foods should be avoided because of their lower nutrient content and the presence of pesticides .Unfortunately, a lot of modern staples that taste sweet are not nourishing and even toxic. Processed foods are the first thing to get rid of because of their inherent toxicity and lack of nourishment. In fact, processed sugar and refined carbohydrates are the preferred fuel for cancer cells.

2. Living in harmony with Nature is nourishing and produces health. Disease is the result of living out of harmony with nature including exercise and sleep routines are important.

3.Specifically, practice getting to bed on time and rising with the sun, which sets a harmonious schedule with the rhythm of the day, and exercises that increase body integration such as yoga and tai chi.

4.Finally, we need positive mind to look at the level of spiritual nourishment that we are receiving. We need to spend time each day in focused contemplation of life, our purpose, our contributions, what we are inspired by, and our relationship with Spirit. We need to take the time to practice feeling deep appreciation for simply existing.

I can believe some of what you have posted, but not all, it is only common sense to do some but not others,
As to the part about eating like our forefathers, I can't believe that, most of the human race is living far longer today than ever before and it is because of medical care and disease maint. that is made possible from the foods and medicines that are available today.
I can see why here some go to a doctor and are not cured or treated wrongly, I have been to doctors here too, and most will not listen or question you any at all, we went because I was having trouble with my hand, my wife asked the doctor if it would be better with an Xray, he told her he was the doctor, not her and he would treat me as he saw fit. and I have had about the same experience other times.
They do not examine or even touch you most times like is done in western practices.

yepp, I guess a pill will never really be very effective for backpains and that kind of stuff. ayurvedic medicine is one of the oldest systems in the world, isn't it? I really hope such practices are not going to be wiped out.
nice to see you back Trangam

Righto Peter, just look what Organic Farming did in the states just a short time ago, Fertilize with cow manure and spread the E-Coli from their guts to fresh salad spinach and sure made the hospitals a lot of money.
And food here in Thailand is covered in Chemical pesticides, Herbicides and a bunch of chemicals used in farming.
Did you know that there is really no nutritional difference in refined sugar and natural sugar. No real difference except cost in vit.A[?] from shark liver or manufactured vit. A[?], not sure it is A , we used to fish shark for the liver and they quit buying right after the war.
Chemical fertilizer is just as good as cow shit, plants don't really care where the nitrogen comes from.

Neighbors having a son going to monk hood party across the street,, damn noise about to bust my windows out, been going on for 2 days,, so much for loud noise avoidance.

About The idea for eating like our forefathers is offer to live a healthy lifestyle to achieve balanced health as the principle of balance between yin and yang properties in an increasingly toxic world.
This probably one of the biggest reasons why the western world suffers from obesity. Changing lifestyles without changing eating habits. In the past, high calory food was a necessity for a large part of the population due to the fact that the work they did was hard, manual labour!

You cannot dig for coal with a pick axe for 12 hours a day without the calory input to support that activity, hence beef fat buttes etc.

It's all very well to have a rosy view of the past but it wasn't that rosy. Fertiliser tended to be human and animal waste along with the full complement of parasites which were passed on generation after generation. Then there was disease pool in the animal population that the mosquito was more than glad to pass on (they still do in many parts of the world).

I would venture to suggest that the only way you can practise these "back to nature lifestyles" is because of the advances made over the last couple of centuries.

As FIP as already pointed out, that is why the average age at death as steadily risen over the last centuries (except for those places where primitive conditions still exist).

yes, I have been back and then keep missing for many days. So, much work!

Yes, in my current knowledge I can't see better cures for the typical back problems better than that in Ayurveda. And also I am not sure if Ayurveda can solve many of the critical problems we get, though I guess they can show some promise in avoiding them.

we also should avoid aggravating the body’s energy balance in the fall, avoid loud noise, fast driving and chaotic activities. Go to bed at a reasonable time, and get a good night’s sleep. Well those rules just cut living in Thailand out of the choices.

One way to learn the traditional medicinal story is to go to the kitchen of people who still eat and cook food the 'old' way. At least in my country, each segment of food made in the morning, afternoon and evening has a medicinal story. Of course, very few follow the system today. I expect thats the same in Thailand?

Personally, I really love Ayurveda. First, I used to have a niggling back problem which used to highlight itself during stressful activities and the rest of the time I would know the problem existed but dormant. One day, it got real bad and that's when my friend took me to an Ayurvedic place and I was provided massage over 5 sessions. Since then the problem has totally vanished. I continue the massage each fortnight and its done whole lot of good in other ways. Of course, we cannot rely only on massage alone and have a lousy lifestyle. In the process of visiting the Ayurvedic place, I came across how they help people with a variety of problems - blood issues; pains; weaknesses etc. Lately, I saw them with providing patients with leech treatment. In fact, the Ayurvedic practicioners have their own God and he he is depicted holding a leech in one hand- which probably means this one key tool for various treatments?

Cowdung is part of all my relatives lives and homes - in the villages - and has been used in various ways. And most of my family members have a history of lasting close to 100 years unless there is an unfortunate accident!

Of course, popular modern medicine is good to handle critical situations, I guess.

I am afraid that is not only thailand. I was hit by a car while riding my bike in the UK and had repeated traction sessions for 6 months. I was being regularly checked by 3 different doctors who all gave the same opinion. It ended up being a ruptured disc and the traction did nothing to cure the problem. Everywhere in the world people are being misdiagnosed.
When i moved to thailand i no longer had any back problems, it's a shame i could not have claimed the flight ticket back as part of the treatment!

Err ! I thinks the foundation and principle of Chi-va Jit is similarly like the way of Macrobiotic and Ayurveda. In order to cope with the changing health needs in the community, we have to identified the major points in community care and community control which viewpoint of human centred systems. If you search on google with these Thai keywords “ดร.สาทิส อินทรกำแหง" and "ชีวจิต",you'll found more information in Thai.

About The idea for eating like our forefathers is offer to live a healthy lifestyle to achieve balanced health as the principle of balance between yin and yang properties in an increasingly toxic world. Since many people in modern society have lost the sense of what foods and beverages balance or imbalance the body, we need balanced nutrition food to maintain the immune system and strengthen the body against disease , to avoid all foods and beverages containing items which can cause imbalance and increasing toxic to our body such as refined sweeteners, chemical dyes, synthetic flavorings or seasonings, refined oils, chemical preservatives, or made from foods grown with chemical insecticides, herbicides, fungicides, chemical fertilizers, or produced by bio-engineering or grown under hot-house conditions , "soft" (carbonated, sweetened) beverages, canned goods, alcoholic beverages, artificial sweeteners or products containing these ingredients .

As the tradition way of our forefathers that be kind to our immune system, we also should avoid aggravating the body’s energy balance in the fall, avoid loud noise, fast driving and chaotic activities. Go to bed at a reasonable time, and get a good night’s sleep.
