My friends cried when they were sending me off at the airport, so I really don't think there's anything special about Thai girls and their crying habits. But as of men crying, I think it differs from person to person. Some girls don't mind the sensitive guy who gets in touch with his emotions by crying, but some girls will feel he's too sissy, not macho enough to offer her security.

Jerome, your question reminded me of a book I read some time ago. In this autobiography, the Thai author tells about a funeral that he attended as a child (I believe it was his mother's). He mentions that crying was considered a big no-no at the funeral, because it was associated with bringing bad luck to the deceased. He goes further, telling that he had a hard time witholding his tears, and then he was carried away by his relatives to prevent tears dropping on the person lying in the coffin.

I wonder if this belief is still alive, because this book was written a LONG time ago - things might have changed since then.

It's not the size of the dog in the fight,, But the size of the fight in the dog..

I walked over a mile out of the woods after a tree had been fell on me, My right arm behind my back with it supported by my left hand, 7 ribs busted off on the right side of my spine, a kidney knocked loose and the right lung punchered and rode 125 miles in a pickup to a doctor.

Just do what ya got to do.

Just my two cents on crying,

I'm not sure if it's just the younger generation of Thais, but I have been a first hand witness to the flow of tears from Thai people.

Shortly before I left Thailand, I had to give a farewell speech to my college and some of my dear friends were indeed, crying. A few of them trying really hard to hide it, a few more of them actually not being afraid to cry...and my dear gay friends making a big fuss and fanning themselves with these Minnie Mouse fans

So, is crying taboo in Thai culture? I wouldn't think so. It's just that it's not often seen (that was the first and last time I saw my Thai friends crying!)

And as for the funerals, I remember an old proverb that when tears are shed for a person's death, that person must swim through the tears to heaven, so crying isn't the best thing to do.

Ok my views are a bit skewed about crying because im a Nak muay. In genrall we are taught not to show any emotion. Now i have seen nakmuays of no more than 55kg fight on like a demon with a crushed cheek bone from an elbow. Then over here (Australia)i have had 6foot 5inch / 100+ kg guys come in to the gym , get a bit of a blood nose and they want to sit down and stop sparing.

Default Crying
I was wondering what people in Thailand thought about showing emotions through crying.
What is thought of men who are not afraid to shed a tear? Are they considered weak, or is it a positive sign of being a sensitive person? Do Thai women try not to cry in front of their men? I have hardly ever seen my fiance cry, is this because I'm such a great companion or maybe she just doesn't feel that strongly about me .

Maybe this whole question is going to get me in trouble because I'm asking a too generalized race based question....

Hello everyone!

Thanks for remembering me I'm touched.
Yes it's true, I haven't been around here for about a year now. I have been known to have a peep around very occasionally, but not that often.

Then Marieke (who helped me A LOT during my dramas) suggested I should drop by the forum and check out the new chat room. Then I found this thread and saw that some people remembered and even asked about me .
Thank you so much guys, it really means a lot to me.

While I haven't been to Thailand since last January, or had much to do with Thailand at all, I still don't want to give up my dream of studying there. Hopefully next year.
I sometimes wonder if my idea of studying in Thailand is just an excuse to find a reason to be in Thailand, since I have lost the main reason I had to go there in the first place.

In 2 weeks from today it'll be a year since I signed the divorce papers at the amphur in Bang Rak. I have kept my word and not had any contact with her whatsoever since that day, not even replying to the occasional email from her. I changed all my phone numbers too.

And yes as Marieke says, I do have a new special someone who is taking very great care of me. She is actually a doctor, and I feel she is maybe too good for me. Not because she is a doctor, just because she is really nice, and I don't think that I deserve such treatment sometimes.

Anyway, the imminent return of Thaksin has aroused my interest and it seems like a good time to make a simultaneous comeback.

Once again thank you everyone for your concern, I really really appreciate it. jing jing.

Hi, Jerome!

I am glad you found your way back here!

With the lovely things happening in your life now, isn't it high time you started a new thread titled "Smiling" to replace this one--"Crying"?

With my best wishes to you and my 'cabalen',

Marieke

Wow, this is really interesting! Just by reading all your posted messages, I have learned a lot about Thai funerals, about dying and about Buddhism! Thanks for all your info.

When I last had to leave my lady in Thailand and come back home I cried, to which she said that I should not cry, only the women should cry, but I noticed she didn't !!!!!!!!!!!! although on the phone she does, its like she would only cry inside in front off me, or perhaps she doesn't give a damn.??
