Anyway. I can exchange the money for free and send her small amounts in the mail. If it gets stolen, it does. I will only hope the person who steals it needs it more than her. David |

I do know tho that at that minute that my US ATM card shows a drop and the Thai ATM shows an increase and there never is a charge and my online bank shows the transaction on my bank balance, but it sure works for me
![]() it is the same as me writing a check as far as my bank is concerned, as it don't say DEBIT CARD,,it says CHECK CARD, now maybe that got something to do woth it. |

I think I found a good solution. Since I work for the airline the money exchange in the airport does not charge me any fee for money exchange. They also have baht here at my home airport in Texas. Which is exciting because when I checked at the NYC airport they did not carry baht. I'd expect baht to be at an airport exchange in New York before Houston.
Anyway. I can exchange the money for free and send her small amounts in the mail. If it gets stolen, it does. I will only hope the person who steals it needs it more than her. But, I think this will be a good compromise. The exchange rate isn't that good though. Currently 36 baht per US dollar. |

I have twice had money stolen from Registered letters sent to my Fiancee in Thailand in the last 12 months, but she says that it is a particular Postman that steals it. Everyone knows who he is but they are all too afraid to complain about him. She and her brothers and sisters have also had him steal money when they have sent it home to their parents. ![]() ![]() ![]() ... has it crossed your simple mind that your so called loved ones are the 'bad postman' just a hint..... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

DanD, I have a bank acct in the states with an ATM-check card which is a debit card with a VISA logo, Also I have an acct at Thai SCB, I go in and present my SCB passbook and my US ATM card and tell them how much I want to transfer, they do a CC thing like a CC charge, but it is a draft on the debit card, I sign the Credit Card type reciept and the money is in my Thai acct. at that very moment and I can go to the SCB ATM and the money is there. They print the money amount in my passbook, and it works well for my visa renewals as money brought into the country.

Well if you are going to do that, why don't you just put it in my US bank acct. your friend will never see the money but at least you will know who got it, as your friend will never see it anyway if you mail it.
The letter will not make it past the first ground stop in country. I did a money transfer today and got a tad over 41 baht=$1 at SCB., so at 36 you are kinda getting it in the shorts anyway. |

Well if you are going to do that, why don't you just put it in my US bank acct. your friend will never see the money but at least you will know who got it, as your friend will never see it anyway if you mail it. Damn how depressing. I have sent her US money and I know she has gotten that. I just thought it would be easier for her to get baht in the mail. I only sent a 500 baht bill. I hid it very well. I try to just be at peace with it. If someone else gets it, I try to think they must need it themselves. I am just trying to do something nice to help someone. She is 13 or 14. I am not ready to set up bank accounts and make trips to deposit and transfer funds. I just want to have fun....have a penpal I buy postcards for and send photos to and a little money now and then. I am encouraging her to learn English and through her school teacher (who translates our letters) I believe she is. I have ordered some books on writing in Thai. I just try to be positive and it sucks that loosing 5 baht per dollar is equated with getting screwed. She is a penpal and a child. My letters are full of stickers and colorful photos and cards. I guess I am rambling because I am just down. It was so exciting to get the baht and see what it looked like. I knew 36 wasn't the best rate. But I didn't think I was getting that screwed. I basically live in the airport and felt it was a small price to pay to go up to the counter and get it between flights. I am sorry I am going on about this. I was just soooo happy today. Sending it off at the post office. I have tried to just enjoy this - not be perfect. I have turned so many things in my life into stressful things trying to make them perfect. The perfect exchange rate, geting stressed trying to explain to a penpal that i am setting up a bank account for her. Sending ATM cards and pin numbers. I just wanted to do something nice for someone. There is always somebody in this world who will rain on your parade. Bring you down. thanks. Maybe I am too sensitive. But being sensitive is the whole reason I have a penpal in Southern Thailand who I am trying to help. I am learning alot about Thailand and have had so much fun. I thought I had found a good COMPROMISE - not the most perfect way to send money. But a way that would work for me. Maybe I should just delete this response. I am tired and I guess I shouldn't let others bring me down. THANKS DAVID FOR YOUR POSITIVENESS! |

Remember if you send a note through the mail it can be detected inside the envelope, with out opening it.
Bank notes include certain security items, such as water marks and metal strips. The metal strip can be detected by a metal detector. Part of the security precautions in a post office, specially concerning international airmail is detecting metal objects in mail, if a metal object is detected it will be x-rayed, so any notes sent through the mail can be detected by a corrupt post office worker. Also any one who works in the postal field can carry a small metal detector to scan your mail. I have known many people, who have sent notes in the mail and it has been surprising, how many times it never turns up, specially when postal workers know, many people send money to there relatives from developed countries to developing or third world countries You only need one corrupt person in the postal chain to lose your money. I don't believe the person who steals your money out of your mail needs the money, it is called criminal greed |

There is a new Thai one which is in both English and Thai. Obviously useful when you are sending to a Thai person. We have seen it on a few Thai shopping carts. We are also thinking about using their services:
