I just wanted to thank Bucky for keeping the rest of you on track......how you do digress.
I'm sure Thai will not mind any tattoos on a "farang" female... might be curious and point a finger or 2... but not to the extend of being rude and regard 1 as ... u know....
However, the treatment to their own Thai women will be different and I'm very sure the Thai will look upon Thai women with tattoos as "lady of the night".
There's a difference in treatments between locals and foreigners.
Enjoy your tour in Phuket.

If you're good-looking and have body of a Greek goddess then I don't see why it's a problem. But if you are the size of a bus and your tattoo is ugly then for the love of God, please do not show it to anyone.
Kinda my thinking on the subject

Hello hello! I am a 25 year old American woman moving to Phukett in 8 days and want to know how Thai culture tolerates women with tattoos. I have a very large one on my back that extends to my shoulders and up to my neck. Should I always wear a t-shirt or is it ok to expose it...and where?
If u're a caucasian lady, u'll probably invite stares for showing off your large tattoo. But rest assure the Thai will not walk up to you and say anything nasty to you cos most of them are basically more tolerance towards foreigners....but if u're a Thai lady with a large Tattoo at the back..... well, maybe the indecent Thai men will take you for an indecent lady or aka lady of the night (by this it don't mean that u're super hero like batman or anything close. *LOL*) and gives u wolf whistles....
Like what Panrit said... jus wear anything you're comfortable with but I'm sure he dosen't mean you're allowed to wear bikini tank top to go to the temples.
Being discreet is still advisable in any part of the world.

It's your prerogative to have a tattoo. Ten years ago, they say 1 out of 4 woman in there 20's had a tattoo in Australia, compared with 1 in 5 men, but not so popular now. Tattoo's are just part of contemporary fashion back then, promoted 20 years ago, by the likes of vintage has-been stars like Cher and Mel C. that made them fashionable 10 or 15 years ago, thought the occurrence of more recent stars is less common, as the fashion of woman having tattoo's is now starting to fade and will be become like the mood ring, the large collars and the afro of the 70's to the next teenage generation, just rare. Personally I cannot see why any one would have one, do you want to wear the one pair of jeans and shirt all your life, don't you want to change the your style, just having a tattoo that will dominate your fashion for 50 years, is like wearing the same thing all your life, how borings.
I personally, think if a woman is very beautiful, tattoos destroys there symmetry and make them less attractive, so why on earth do men and woman want to make them selves less attractive by having a tattoo I don't know, that has always been a mystery to me.
Having said that, even thought I don't like tattoo's to look at, I always judge a woman on her personality and I think Thai people will judge you the same way, as it who you are what is important not what you look like, having said that, there is nothing that turns me off more than a woman who deliberately lets her self go physically, I like some one fit and healthy and not over weight. Personally I don't wear a T shirt, with the heat in Thailand, I prefer some thing with a collar, so I don't get sun burnt on the back of the neck, usually a rave shirt if I'm going swimming.

I have seen some of the city bus' in some citys and freight trailers that have a kind of mural paintings on them that even have one way paint covering the windows and not seen from inside that does make them look better than just a plain yellow bus.

If your concern is having to look at someone you find displeasing, then you need to look away. I don't think it's the world's responsibility to fit your beauty standard.
I did look away but I still see the side of the truck.

I do not think much of any tats on women, but I am a farang, and used to spend time with the 1%er Bikers at different times in the states, and just never thought that they looked good on women, but they were acceptable on some 300 pound dude on a Harley.

Kind of like ear rings on men as well as tats,,if you have one in your left ear, you either need to be a biker or a seaman, as thats the way it was set up to be, If in your right ear,,then stay away from me.
But things change and now it is hard to tell the profession of anyone or even the sex just from appearances..

If you don't mind my asking.
Why would someone 25 years old and not know anything about the country or their customs be moving to that country??

Are you coming in the coarse of employment??

Seems like most come, like it and then decide to settle there, just curious

In earlier days, if I am not wrong in my region, simple tatoos were means of identifying people - their names, community, family... was that the case in Thailand too?

Eskimos used to tattoo on the face, so did some indian tribes in America, natives in the congo and africa,, and a lot of scar tattoos were also used in places around the world, the Chinese had some beautiful ink and scar tats and I wanted one when I was a young man and went there,They put em on with sharpened bamboo, but I just never could work up the guts to do it, or maybe not drunk enough,, But I did wake up one morning aboard shit with a terrible pain in my right arm, and when I looked , I had a tat that went from my elbo to my wrist that a shirt sleeve just barely covers, but it is just ink and needle,

I know that the guys I have talked to about tats is that the ones they have are for luck or some other VooDoo kind of thing and some were put on by Monks and supposed to be special as far as I can really understand, but you know I do not understand everything they say either, tho I spend all day some days over at the market place in the village shooting the breeze with em.

I think you guys are off the track... I think the main question is "is it appropriate for a LADY (female) to expose her huge tattoos in Thailand"?

No one cares about males with tattoos................

I have many many tattoos and have never had a problem. Some of my tattoos are in Thai and I get a lot of comments on those, especially from massueses who get to spend a lot of time looking at them.

Hello gentlemen!

I just wanted to thank Bucky for keeping the rest of you on track......how you do digress. And to Ong Bak....no, I don't quite have that svelte tucker build. FaranginPhetch, I have moved around quite often over the last 5 years, but have never been to Asia. I hear that Thailalnd is just beautiful and I love the beach so I chose Phuket. I am living in Phuket town at the English language school. I am here to get my TEFL certification so that I may continue my travels as an English teacher. And no, of course I don't mind you asking.
