AH YEA billk, But the Staffordshire terrier was not an American breed, and England had Pit Dogs long before they were ever brought to America.

And some of the dogs running loose around here do show some of the pit breeds features, and not all dogs will turn and run at aggressive actions from people, especially direct eye contact, that is an aggressive sign that will put most dogs on the defensive very fast.

I accept the logic that the dog can be a menace to uninformed kids & other people in the area.

I guess, its just that I have many a kind stray dogs around my house who have a very good relationship with me and so I kind of feel like defending their kinds somewhat. In fact these dogs trust me so much that they will not move an inch even if my car tire is an inch away from their body... and I have to often ask them to get up!!

most of these soi dogs are really a sorry sight, sick and skinny and scared. I'm staying near Wat Chiang Man, that temple takes care of at least 30 stray dogs, they are in much better shape. monk friends told me that they need to take care of dogs because bad monks become stray dogs in their next life so they feel responsible.
I've been bitten by a (probably) rabid dog once (it intended to attack a motorcyclist making a loud noise with his vehicle but I happened to be in the way). the bite was on my calf luckily, but the wound took almost three months to heal, as it was really deep and got infected despite all the antibiotics, tetanus shot and rabies shots I got. it's nasty, I tell you. and you just never know when it will happen. so that's why I prefer to keep a distance. I wouldn't want to imagine what a scared dog could do to a child. and it's just the matter of a split second.

Arghhh Pit bulls - America has given the world many wonderful things but pit bulls aren't among them.
Haven't you read or seen the film Oliver Twist? Bill Sykes had a pit bull!

The point, America didn't give the world the pit bull, they were being used for bear and bull baiting before America even existed !

Have u ever seen Thailand street dogs? Maa wat or maa soi?
I believe I mentioned previously in the thread, that I was amazed when I came across a group of motorcycle taxi drivers on Soi 11 Sukhumvit giving the street dogs a good bath.

And I have seen all kinds, thin ones, fat ones, ones missing limbs, other blind in one eye, etc. And I can say I have never seen a mean one.

I am a dog lover or to use a broader term, an animal lover but I am also a responsible owner. I firmly believe a dog needs to be under control. Any dog has the potential to injure a person I don't care what it's nature is. The bite could come because a child steps on its tail and being suprised the dog snaps. Or it could be that the dog is being tormented, or the dog could just be vicous for whatever reason,

But to get back to the original post, there is this dog that has bit once, that is aggressive, and that the poster was concerned for his childs welfare. What should he do? I will always err on the side of caution.

I've done my homework and yes, Peterg, you and FIP are quite right. The American pit bull was developed in the late 1800s by crossing staffies with bull mastiffs but pit bulls were a pre-existing type. Of course, there are several other breeds which are a real problem, because of their combination of strength and aggression.

In Victoria, where I live, it's now illegal to import American pit bulls and they all have to be sterilized, caged and muzzled when in public. Eventually we'll have a pit bull free zone. Heavy dudes will probably then find a new kind of dangerous dog to keep.

Sorry, we have segued a bit haven't we?

This individual case: Convince the owner to keep this dog off the soi. Diplomacy seems the strategy least likely to produce unintended consequences.

Longer term solutions: Control of soi dogs to keep them as disease-free as possible and to remove the dangerous ones.
