With a work permit you can get yearly visas. After you have been here for a few years then you can apply for a Resident Visa. Offhand these cost about 200,000 baht. They are not easy to get as they limit them to 100 people per nation. You can also only apply in December. Oh yes, you also need to earn more than 55,000 baht per month which is why I cannot apply for it. A set period of time after this you can then apply for a Thai id card and really become Thai!

there are a lot of foreigners earning half that as their basic salary. And they still manage to survive. To say the least, lol! There are foreigners who earn Thai wages (much less than any of the previously mentioned figures) and they are just fine. Like you said, Richard, it all depends on location and lifestyle.
They are not easy to get as they limit them to 100 people per nation. This is quite difficult for people from the US, UK etc., but the odds ain't so bad for folks who hail from obscure little nations. |

Now I have a UK full driving licence and I wonder would it transfer to Thailand or would I need to retake my test once I had learnt to speak Thai.
Also about marrige to a Thai lady, What documentation would I need to bring with me so that I should not have to return to the UK. I read a china marrige site that you need your passport and birth certs legalised and letters to confirm you are single from unrelated aquaintances. Is it like this in Thailand. I have never been offically married (I am seperating from my common law wife) so my passport would say I am single, I looked and there is no indication that I can see on my passport that says I have cohabitted or have a common law wife, So I know you have bloggs about marriage and I have read them, but I don't recall this info.(Richard I have read loads of your bloggs and they are informative.) Ta very much for all the contributions so far. Offthread thanks to KevinN and Brian loads more info from them. Brian has the life I want some of that small holding info, that sounds like a great small business. |

My license is (was) the same as your. I also brought over with me an international driver's license. I didn't have to take a test. Just filled in quite a few documents. However, some people said they had to do a test. I think it all depends which area you go to.
There has been quite a few posts already on the subject of marriage. Try a search by clicking on the link at the top. If that doesn't come up with anything, then try posting a new topic for "marriage". |

I spent 8 months in Chiang Mai last year and probably going back this year. Its a diamond place to live...none better in my opinion. There is always something to moan about anywhere, I'm in New YOrk at the mo and its far from a bed of roses. Everyone's allowed to whinge once in a while but if certain people are serial moaners, best aviod them I think....
