In a mixed group, some may find a particular ethnic joke or insult humor appealing. Others may find it appalling--and even tasteless and disrespectful.
Needless to say, those who would appreciate it are those who regard the target with disfavor. The anatomy of humor asserts that insult humor is a substitute for assault, or an attempt to vent our hostility when physical aggression is not practical. Thus, the verbal attack makes us feel superior--and we laugh. But it could also get us in trouble. |

There's more to it than that. In the case of ethnic jokes between Kiwis, Aussies, Poms etc its just good-natured meaningless banter! No offence is intended and none is ever taken! With Yanks though, I'm not so sure, as they seem to take themselves far too seriously. Some of the posts on this thread are a bit "precious" and show a high degree of insecurity. If you can't stand a bit of friendly joshing you must be very unsure of your place in the world. Political correctness is an insidious disease and its time we got rid of it.

What would you like the yank's to do NP? Make the difference in another world war. ?? Friendly joshing? Time and a place. Tec Noir explain's the situation quite well. Your post of a month ago spoke of your sadness that you were discriminated against in 69 when you were in thailand. Think you were referred to as a farang. Wonder, does the feeling linger on?

Well I looked at all categories on this web, there are cats. for lot of different subjects-but no category for humor/entertainment, now you know you can learn a LOT about a country & its people by their humor. So far I have not read one Thai joke, or amusing anecdote, or a riddle...you know the fun stuff. By my nature I like humor, and it is healthy for you, human beings could not live without humor....So let`s see some Thai humor/jokes. Or don`t Thais have any sense of humor?...Here`s an old Thai riddle--now when some of you read this, you will say;"Nooo, that`s an old Greek riddle, not Thai."...well Greeks wrote it on paper, but the riddle originated in oooold Asoka`s Siam, and Alexander The Great brought it to Greece. Here`s how an old Thai wiseman put it to Alex;"Alex, tell me what this is IN THE MORNING IT WALKS ON 4 LEGS, AT NOON IT WALKS ON TWO LEGS, AND IN THE EVENING IT WALKS ON 3 LEGS?"..Now the riddle is REAL with an answer-do you know it?...but if you believed my little historic narrative here,..then I have a house to sell you in Bangkok, with magnificent view of Phuket island Thais have a very good sense of humour but a lot of it is thaleung ·ÐÅÖè§ "Risque" A Thai phrase says: ÊÑ»´ÃÇѹÅйԴ¨Ôµá¨èÁãÊ "sapadon wan la nit jit jaem sai" .A little risqueness each day keeps the spirit bright. |

Now to tell a joke: There was an Englishman, Scotsman and an Irishman............... Or was it: There was an Australian, New Zealander and an Englishman................ Or was it: There was a Thai, Burmese, and Laotian................. Or was it: There was a Brazilian, Argentinian, and a Paraguyan...... Damn, I've forgotten what the joke was |

Sorry Marieke, totaly disagree with you! Given life's ups and downs, you can either laugh or cry and laughing is by far the best bet. As I said previously, everyone does it, without offence being taken. Remember, "[I]sticks and stones will break my bones but names will never hurt me..." |

We all have jokes about "others", but it's always better not to tell them in public unless we are sure that especially that "others" share the some humour about themselves. Just basic Ethics, the school should teach you at first grades, if your parents didn't.
Before labelling all the people of other origin as dumb, check what others think of greek lifestyle and companies anywhere. At least greek banks and exchange students here are quite famous. P.S. "kurva" is pretty international, avoid overusing it. |
