Do Thais have a certain dance style? Yes, they do. If you would like to practice the skill look at that funny robot, R2D2 in the Star Wars movies, they move just like him.

Im not gonna comment on how us caucasians dance as we are just as bad.

One more thing: most of the Discos already close at 2 A.M. so don`t be too late.

Since the females have stalls, I am assuming this only applies for the men? lol.

Would you say that Thais have a certain dance style? If so, could you describe.

The clubs here usually close around 2AM. I know there were talk about having the discos in Thailand close earlier. Over here, it is different. They are trying to change the laws so that clubs are allowed to open past 2 A.M -- one of my favorites does not close until 4AM! But all of the bars usually stop serving drinks by 1:30AM.

hehe Thai dance style is very different from Western style that is for sure...and the R2D2 thing is pretty correct. But what gets me is its the same style to every kinda of music!! I was very fasinated by it to tell you the truth.

As for music...well the clubs n pubs i went to they play more rock and music like that rather than RnB, Hip Hop. Though sometimes through-out the night they will play a couple of tracks which is the time i stop drinking and start dancing!! hehe But the Thaise seem to like any music which is great.

The clubs arent so much dancing areas as you england n america. Through-out the floor every group has their own table where the drinks are and all that and people just dance around there really. Its handy but i didnt find it very social, and tough trying to move through 100s of ppl n dodge tables!

They do close earlier around 2, but go earlier too if you wanna get a table, or even a decent table because it gets really busy.

As for your style, the shirt is cool! I'm English and i know how guys dress when they go out, and its fine over there too....

But Have a great time and party hard!!

Man, Thai discos are the only places in the world that I'll get up and cut the rug! It's cool 'cause if you're like me (who got laughed out of a club in Canada first night out) and therefore self-conscious, you can let loose because no one really cares!

Of course, it's not to your detriment to have a smokin' femme to dance with

Awww man, I *must* have spent too much time in the eighties. It's just a slang term for dancin'!

If y'ever met me in a Thai disco, you'd probably think I was Thai; that is, until I busted out the English sans Thai accent.

I thought perhaps the phrase was describing a certain dance move, like the running man, the twist, the mashed potato & let's not forget the locomotion or electric slide.

I couldn't imagine what "cutting the rug" would look like.

Thank you for the information!

First off don't ever ever go to a club in shorts or sandals. Yes you CAN but please don't. It is considered disrespectful by Thais. In fact shorts are considered distasteful at all times not just in clubs.

As mentioned there are two kinds of club. Western and Thai style. At either one you are likely to hear the same music the only difference is whether the music is live or not and whether the dance floor is packed with tables.

If you are dancin inclined don't sweat the thai dance moves they don't have any. If you can do trance techno whatever you will most likely be the coolest kid in school.

Bangkok clubs western style: Mystique, Cm2, q-bar, narcissus, the bed, lucifer, the ones on koh san road there are tons. The clubs in the hotels may be open later at this point.

Chiang Mai clubs: bubbles Ozone, G club, mandalay, NIce Illusions, Warm Up, Fashion house, Forte(open til 4 am) etc

Hey yeah, I'm from Cali too, and the first time I went to a club in Thailand was when I was 12, so I've been to many different types of clubs in Thailand. And yeah the clubs with the live bands and tables are way more ubquitous in Thailand. But at some places after a certain time, the band stops and switches to a dj or whatever. I'm not so into those places cause it is a bit more difficult to manuver and dance with all the people PLUS the #### tables and stuff. So I usually prefer the clubs that play hip hop music and have more dancing room. And there's plenty of those too. Usually more foreigners are also there as well as like thai people who live abroad or mixed kids, so they're more into the western thing.

As for dressing for the clubs. Wear whatever you feel comfortable in. I mean if you wanna wear like button down shirts and stuff, go for it, cause it's not like you're gonna stand out. As for the girls, they don't dress that provactive, but it's not like they're all covered up. I tend to see girls wearing like spaghetti straps tanks. When I go clubbing there, I dress like I would when I go out in here. well i don't think that i stand out TOO much from the other girls, at least not at the more western clubs, well...maybe a bit.

As for the dancing. there's grinding at the western clubs. But definetly not at the thai clubs.

For some reason I just can't "go" when some guy has his hands on me.
The only way to escape them is to head for a cubicle- and then you have to be quick to shut the door.

Woo! Massage attendants! I freakin' loved them and always tipped well. Then again, 'cos I was an Asian, they only gave me the shoulder job, but my farang friends got the full meal deal with a thigh job included!

Sounds like a great time, CanuckJonny. Were the friends you went with female?

I'm female and I try not to go with just a group of females to clubs here in the States. Pretty much you'll end up getting hit on by drunk guys. Not too fun. I always go with a posse of my guy friends. They act as bodyguards and make awesome dance partners too. I definitely agree that if your partner is a great dancer, it makes you look just as good (lol, hopefully. ) Not to generalize, but most Asians I have met tend to be really good at dancing, especially my Filipino friends. Hip-hop, techno, raving, you name it! I get exhausted trying to keep up!

I do agree. I have seen quite a few Thai men wearing shorts. I do that too when I go out with my beloved, in fact very often cos Bangkok is rather warm. Perhaps my short are more "bermuda-like" and reached almost to my knees, I have never had anyone telling me it was inappropriate or given me the "look". Once I even wore it to a big temple that we had not visited before, where we did our tambun together. I remembered telling my gal that I was wearing shorts (didn't know we were not going to ahve time to go back to my hotel to change) when I was on the way to her house, and she was apprehensive at first, until she saw that I was wearing that bermuda shorts. Then she said "no problem".

As I look no different from a Thai Chinese, I think people will be less forgiving if my attire is really not appropriate. I was apprehensive before I went to the temple, but everything seem normal while I was there.

However I think it would be very inappropriate for the lady to wear shorts to a temple.

Ditto for me; what are they thinking making boys wear shorts all the time at school? No wonder we got hit with rulers all the time

Well, i real Thai style disco is pretty different from one in the west. Firstly, there is usually a live band that plays all night with only an actual disco going on at the end.
Most disco dont have a dance floor and so the patrons spend the night bopping away at their respective tables.
Thai disco style is that you mainly socialize with the friends you have come with and so there isnt much contact with the other tables however since you are farang you can get away with chatting up lots of girls all over the show.

As this is Thailand the dress code is much more laid back than where i come from and you could even get away with shorts at most places. in comparison to the west, no the girls dont dress THAT provocatively.

There are a few Western style discos in Bangkok that actually have dance floors and just play rave all night. Most Westerners here prefer them to the Thai style ones. From the top of my head i can think of CM2 at Siam Square, Lucifer at Patpong and Narcisus On Sukhimvit 23 etc....

The authorities over the past couple of years have taken a certain enjoyment to 'busting' discos and having all the patrons inside do a 'pee pee' test so its very risky to go popping any illegal substances before going to a disco especially in BKK.

I do prefer the Thai style discos though as i like live music. And one thing good about Thailand is that you dont have to queue up at the door for an hour before you get in.

Oh yes, finally the restrooms. You will find that there are attendants in all the Mens whose job it is to give you a massage while you pee and a wet towel to freshen up with before you go back to your table. A tip is asked for of course.

Yeah, the friends I went with were mostly femmes, and they were all uber cool about letting me walk in with my arms 'round their hips, thusly pushing my pimp-meter through the roof.

I was (and actually still am) pretty gun shy in Thailand until a certain Brasilian instinctively started slipping ice cubes into my mouth, much to the shock and jealous awe of the Thais around me. I'll agree with you on the male bodyguards in North America; I go to clubs mostly for people watching (yeah, one of those guys) and always laugh my ass off when I see a group of 18 something first-time club boys get shot down by much more experienced, much older women.
