Default Asking about someone's sin sot
I've been asked by a few people how much I paid for my wife's Sin Sot and I'm not sure if I am comfortable with the question.
Is it a normal innocuous question to ask someone in Thailand? I understand that asking how much one earns is not uncommon nor is it considered rude by Thais, does this fall into the same category?

It just seems that they are sizing you up and trying to figure out some things that are not any of their business. Maybe I am being too sensitive and should just answer. What does eveyone think?

I just asked my Thai sister about this. She said that it depends on how close you are to those people. Members of your family, close friends - OK. The same question by anyone else is considered rude. Like you said, none of their business.

I don't think you have to tell anyone if you're uncomfortable with doing so. Maybe try just answering พอสมควร "por som kuan" (roughly,"enough" or "an appropriate amount"), and move the conversation on.

hehe, yeah that would probably be better I've heard พอสมควร used by Thais when trying to avoid questions about their salary so that's why I thought it might apply here too.

Be careful not to call it cheap, there may be a horrible misunderstanding.

What a perfect answer! Now if someone could tell me how to say that in Thai I would be all set.
