Most of my Thai friends who live in Hat Yai are very very poor making a whooping USD $0.50 (20 baht)/hour. The cost of living in Hat Yai is low as well. Is it possible that you friends think your former roommate "must be rich" because she is an international student and has the funds to attend an international school in some other place in the world?

Question about hat yai

My former roommate is an international student from Thailand. Whenever I told my Thai friends that she is from Hat Yai, their response is "She must be rich".???

What do they mean by that?
