I think commiting suicide is a very childish and selfish way in taking matter in their own hands.

I have seen in documentaries that Australia does have one of the highest suicide rates in the world especially among the youth.

Interesting to note that while females attempt it more, there are actually more guys that go through with the deed.

My friend's wife tried to commit suicide - hanging herself. But I think my friend was actually brave. He took her from the point she was 'hanging' - carried her all over a hill to the hospital and she is back to life. It was shuddering to hear the story. This was quite some time ago. Now, they are doing fine. Just to think how this story could have been so different.

Quote[/b] ]I was wondering if these "suicide girls" were just as common in Thailand as they are here on my tiny island.
Makiyo, your question reminded me of something I read a couple days ago. From that, it seems that your assumption is true - but only for a certain segment of the Thai female population. Let me quote part of the aforementioned work, Stephen Leather's Private Dancer:

Self-mutilation is a common phenomenon amongst the girls involved in prostitution. Many have scars on their wrists, not from serious suicide attempts but from superficial cuts, usually
carried out in a rage under the influence of drugs or drink.

For much of their lives the girls have little or no control over their environment or their relationships. Women are generally subservient to men in Thai culture, and throughout their childhoods they are under strict control as to where they can go and what they can do.

In the poorer areas of the country, especially in rural communities, sexual abuse is common. Many are abused by their brothers or fathers or by male relatives, actions over which they have no control. Often the girls themselves are unwilling to complain of the abuse, accepting it as the norm.

Even when the girls leave the environment of their village and move to Bangkok, the family continues to exert control on them with requests for financial assistance. No matter how much the girls earn, they are often unable to save because of the family's ever-increasing demands.

In an effort to establish some sort of meaningful relationship, the girls often become involved with Thai men working in the bar environment - DJs, waiters, and touts. Often these men have been working in the bars much longer than the girls and tend to be older and more experienced. As a result, they are adept at getting the girls to give them money and early on in the relationship they begin to exert control over them.

The girls then find themselves trapped between the demands of their family and the demands of their newly-acquired boyfriend.

To aggravate the situation, the Thai boyfriends usually refuse to wear condoms, which frequently results in pregnancy. If the girl keeps the baby, as many do, she has yet another demand on her, emotionally and financially. All through her life, the girl has little or no control over her surroundings, and as a result anger and resentment builds up until it cannot be
contained any longer. But when it is finally released, it is often directed inwards, at herself.

The girl feels that she is worthless, that in some way she is responsible for her own predicament, and as such she tries to hurt, to punish, herself.

There is one more thing I'd like to add to the above: the author only mentions cutting the wrists, but another frequented method of attempted suicide in these cases is hanging.

PS: this is definitely a weird topic though... I better row my little boat to happier waters

Thanks Seeker for your article, but it is indeed a very sad article and I hope this is only a very small minority in Thailand because nobody deserves to live life under such desolate circumstances.

I agree, Makiyo.

Fortunately, I can confirm that it is a small population segment indeed; all the reliable sources I read or talked to so far have pointed out that Thailand's bad reputation in this matter has been, for the most part, blown out of proportion.

I have lived in Japan for the past 9 years now and while there is quite a large number of suicides, I haven't heard of any spurned lovers seriously threatening it. Sure the occassional ,"I want to die", but no serious threats.
More commom is the salaryman jumping in front of a train after being laid off, or as they say here, "restructured". This is done for two reasons, one to escape the shame of being unemployed,(often the man leaves the house in his suit as normal for weeks after being fired, instead of telling his family.) The second reason is so that his family can collect his life insurance.

Another, and recently increasingly popular (if you believe the media) form is young people meeting on suicide related sites and then meeting up and commtting mass-suicide. This often happens late autumn in a very famous forrest. The bodies are not found until the next spring.

I am glad to hear that you read it Delawang!

So... you didn't like it?

Yes, it is fiction, and a good one at that, in my opinion. (I didn't say otherwise before, did I? ). However, it would be a mistake to dismiss the informational value of a work, just because it involves fictional characters.

This is especially true in this case. It is almost certain that the author did background research for his book, because the social setting and the descriptions of some Thai customs match those that I have read in documentative, non-fictional works about Thailand.

Well, anyway. If we continue with this here, it is surely going to take this thread off-topic... So, I will start another topic about this book and its possible informational value (once I figure out where it would be appropriate to post "Literature about Thailand"). Perhaps others have read the story too, and might have some interesting input.

I think for women, trying to commit suicide is just their way of asking for help, whereas for guys who really want to commit suicide, they'll really do it. Makiyo, If you are encountering this problem, i suggest that you be hard hearted and ignore it.... at least for the time being. Otherwise, if the lady finds that it works for the first time, she definitely use it again.

Default Commiting suicide
I was wondering about Thai girls and their suicide tendencies because back here in Singapore, I know a couple of guy friends who have girlfriends that hurt themselves to get their boyfriend's attention. They even use threats of suicide to prevent their boyfriends from breaking up with them...I was wondering if these "suicide girls" were just as common in Thailand as they are here on my tiny island.

I work in a hospital in Australia, and when I worked in the Emergency department we had many attempted suicides by woman coming in as patients. It is well known in Australia that woman attempt suicide 5 times more than men and the reasion for this is most are just looking for attention linked to to a mental condition and have no intention of suicide. men do not attempt suicide as much as woman but men actually comit suicide 5 times more than woman in australia.

From the first post you have posted, I just wanted to comment some stuff. Personally, I think it's pathetic that you would threaten and say something that is a very major, big issue on this world. I mean you should not joke around saying, "Blah blah blah if you don't listen to me I'm going to kill myself." That just shows themselves how low, self-centered they are. I mean if you really want attention, be patient hunnie. Don't say anthing bad.. I mean some people DO commit suicide around here, but that's not for attention. Also, you should live life to the fullest because you'll never know when you or youself is going to be lost in this world. I've written an essay about Life & Death and made a 97/A. That was the highest grade. My teacher told me the reasons why I lost points was because he wanted me to expand my essay. I mean it was already 4 pages long front and back. Oh well, he told me I was very gifted in writing and I was one of those people that just don't end their thoughts, etc. Anyways, my fingers are getting tired. Good day to all!

Adrian, if you have anything, please add, I would like to hear because I do have friends who have partners who threaten suicide and even know a person who has attempted. Although it happens all around me, I never can understand the reason where these people would be driven to such a sense of hopelessness that they would actually end their lives. (The latter part refering to people who do the real deed and not the attention seekers.)

I mean look at the starving people who live in refugee camps in the middle east and some parts of Africa. They only own the very clothes on them and have no means to secure the coming days food, yet they strive to live on with hope of a better future. (At least that's what I think...)

I just can't understand suicide...

Hmmm.... where did I read something like this before?

See Delawang? Private Dancer may be a fictional story, but the main aspects were taken from real life.

Nevertheless, I am not going to post a new topic about it, because it doesn't fit anywhere. Oh well... mai pen rai.

Oh my god! That's so sad...I can't imagine how he would feel...probably feels that he is responsible for her death to some extent.

To Adrian, thanks for sharing with us. At least you knew what you were doing was not encourageable. Still must have hurt like #### though...
