Chennai Corporation will soon open 200 eateries that will sell idli, curd rice, sambar rice and meals at nominal prices.
Depending on the response, more such eateries would be opened at 1,000 sites, mayor Saidai Duraisamy told the corporation council Wednesday. “The objective is to provide quality food to Chennaiites. These fastfood joints will be named after chief minister J. Jayalalithaa. “If successful, the scheme will be expanded across greater Chennai,“ the mayor said to a loud applause by ruling AIADMK councillors. The outlets would be a boon for casual labourers and those from lowerincome groups, he said. Sources said a team led by the corporation health officer would execute and monitor the scheme in coordination with revenue and zonal officials. The team would periodically review quality and quantity of the food served at these stalls to be entirely operated by Chennai Corporation. Earlier, the corporation had allowed Tamil Nadu Poultry Development Corporation to operate stalls selling food items prepared using chicken and egg. Similarly, the fisheries department recently set up fish stalls. But this is the first time the corporation is planning to operate food stalls. -dc chn |
