The city corporation is all set to intensify the collection of segregated plastic which could go into laying roads. An action plan has been drawn up to lay roads using plastic bitumen for the city and is being seriously considered by the civic agency as chief minister J. Jayalalithaa, though keen on the development of Greater Chennai, is cautious about environmental problems this could throw up, according to sources.
Plastic roads have already been been laid in parts of Chennai and the feasibility of laying more such roads will now be studied in depth, says a senior corporation official. As an offshoot, a pilot project started in ward 141 for door-to-door collection of garbage and to do away with bins, may be expanded to three more wards. Details on the progress of daily and periodical collection in corporation limits will be reviewed and directions issued for better financial management, add sources, revealing that a data compilation project underway, may be completed in six months. The corporation is, meanwhile, reportedly studying the vehicle requirements of the newly demarcated zones of the expanded city and plans to procure a fleet of bulldozers, earthmovers, and dust collectors shortly. - dc chn |
