The northeast monsoon failed to set in on October 20 for the third consecutive year causing apprehension over the amount of rain the state will receive this year.
Tamil Nadu is already having a deficit of 10 per cent of southwest monsoon. Even the easterly winds, usually expected by October 15, have not strengthened except some intermittent rainfall. The met department, however, predicted that the easterly winds would set in by October 21, which would lead to the onset of the northeast monsoon within a week. “Due to late withdrawal of southwest monsoon, the arrival of northeast monsoon has been delayed this year,” said Dr Y.E.A. Raj, deputy director general of Meteorology, Regional Meteorological Centre. He said a low-pressure area has already crossed the Bangladesh coast and easterly winds are expected on Friday. “If the easterlies set in as per our expectations, then there is a great chance of monsoon lashing the East coast by October 27,” he added. TN, Puducherry and parts of southern AP and southern Kerala are expected to get rains. The coastal region from Nellore to Vedaranyam would receive the maximum rainfall. In 2009 and 2010, the Northeast monsoons had set over TN and Puducherry on October 29. Dr S.R. Ramanan, director, Area Cyclone Warning Centre, RMC, said there would be isolated rains in northern Tamil Nadu and scattered rain in southern Tamil Nadu for the next three days due to prevailing of upper air circulation over TN and Sri Lanka coasts. -dc |

Hi Praveen,
now that the monsoon is not going to be coming that soon, I thought this will be a nice piece of information for all to get ready to meet the monsoon when it eventually does come. Common, contagious, but curable Common, contagious, but curable - Hindustan Times |
