Heavy Rains bring relief to humid city
Rains, which began about a week ago, continued their spell on Monday. With rains mostly during the night, the days are hot and humid. So, when it rained again on Monday it took people by surprise.
“I never expected rain today as there was no sign that it was going to pour. Anyways it has bought relief from the heat,” said a Raju, a motorist in Nandanam. Traffic took a hit. Pedestrians and motorists were seen searching for a shelter. Many travellers were inconvenienced when autorickshaw drivers refused to ferry them. Many were seen haggling with the drivers over the fare. There were major traffic jams on Kodambakkam Bridge, Nungambakkam High Road, Mylapore, Teynampet, Chamiers Road, R K Mutt Road among other places in the city. Waterlogging was reported at Teynampet, Sterling Road and parts of Nungambakkam. E Kuladaivelu, director of meteorological department, said the city would receive more rain mostly during evening and night this week. “Rains at this time of the year are normal. It has been raining here because the trough of low pressure runs from coastal Andhra Pradesh to south Tamil Nadu through north coastal Tamil Nadu,” he said. While Nungambakkam received 5.4mm of rainfall, Meenambakkam recorded 9.9mm. Humidity at Nungambakkam was 95%, while it was 92% at Meenambakkam. - times of india |
