India Meteorological Department sources said Tamil Nadu records an average rainfall of 33 cm during the southwest monsoon season, but there has been a deficit from June to August 10 this year.
Though coastal Tamil Nadu receives 60 per cent of its annual rainfall during the northeast monsoon season, the state can expect normal rainfall in the ongoing southwest monsoon, said Dr Y.E.A. Raj, deputy director general of meteorology, Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai. Stating that the rainfall in Tamil Nadu has been normal over the past two months during this season, he said the state would experience an average 3335 degree C temperature in the next couple of months. Chennai, Kancheepuram, Nilgiris and Tiruvannamalai districts received normal rainfall. While Coimbatore and Theni districts received excess rainfall, all the other districts recorded scanty and deficit rainfall. Metro water officials exuded confidence that the city reservoirs had enough storage to ensure uninterrupted drinking water supply till the end of the year. The four city reservoirs jointly have 6.536 tmcft of water against the full storage capacity of 11.057 tmcft. Given the monthly requirement of around 1.2 tmcft, the city would not face water shortage at least for the next five months. However, by then, the northeast monsoon would have hit Chennai. |
