The most important thing you need to know to prepare for as shiai is taking something with you that'll keep you occupied during the hours and hours of waiting until it's your time to compete.
My dream is to one day own a top notch RV so that I can get there for roll call, sit through the openning ceremonies and then go sleep, eat, watch TV and relax in my RV. |

I say you just stay calm and do your best. Being at a tournament is fun and participating in one is even better. I participated in my first one earlier this year although I think that I could have used more keiko practice before then. Hopefully things will fare well at Chicago provided I can go to that one.

Remember zanshin... first shiai jitters have the result of making people not have enough zanshin, they don't run through or have enough kiai, etc. and without it you will get no points regardless of how good the initial attempt is...
Be aggressive... not all out crazy... but if you let them be aggressive and more offensive than you then you are gonna be at a disadvantage... in the very least, if your attacks are not good enough for ippon, by going at them you will hopefully mess up their maai and timing and all that so it will also help to protect you... |
