Scary. I wonder how long it will be before IBM builds a Kendo Robot and it beats the best human alive.

It's a lot faster, cheaper and easier just to train a human to do what the robot can do. Sometimes, technology isn't the best answer.

I'd love to see the thing in action. I mean there has to be elements to kendo that a robot just can't match, but to have to practicing at 3rd Dan....yikes!

Ahahahaha, man. Just Schwarzenegger on the motorcycle with a shinai (or that HUGE bokken from that one picture on the thread about "Heavy Weapons"). Battling the T-1000 whose Bogu is indestructable...or just fuses together from liquid metal...

That would be really cool to have. If it can't play kendo you can always use it to open the door or hold the bogu.

I saw one of these kendogames on the inet once. It was a big arcade like thing with electric shinai's. Anyone ever seen them, probably in Japan only? That might be a nice purchase (since it was quite a while ago the prices of these machines probably are arround the scrap value today). I think it was a SEGA machine.

Looks like Koreans are more into techno Kendo, isn't it? They had the eletric bogu, now a robot, what's next? You can have a chip in you that you can sense all attacks and block them really fast? lol

Check out the Kendo Robot thread in the multimedia section. There's a clip showing this robot in action. It's really quite impressive!

it seems a good idea, but if it isn't REALLY advanced (which would make it expensive), a human motodachi is probably better..

I actually played one of these arcades at the fair last weekend, I don't even remember the name of it. It was sorta like resident evil style, you get a sword instead of a gun. Not only I spent $1 playing it, I looked like a complete idiot holding a plastic katana (with ducktapes on it), and with a couple stood behind me cheering for me ("She's a tough one!" "yeh! Keep cutting!". I was like "WTF's wrong with these 2? GO AWAY! Am I not already looked like an idiot by playing this game?" Well, I sworn that I will never play such a game again even if it is Kendo.

Hmm, I'm a little wary of a kendo robot. I mean, I'm assuming it's a stationary robot so how would you observe zanshin after a strike? You'd have to either lock up with it (forget the correct term at the moment) or move around it. Seems like they need to think about this a bit more, or maybe we just don't know enough of the specs the robot has or it's capabilities.

I think this could be a really good training tool, except for the fact that it'll probably break if you miss. I heard that Japan already beat Korea to it, there was a sensei at my dojo for only a year (school reasons) and he said that there was a robot thing for kendo.

God...I can see it now...I'll be watching myself in the mirror this Tuesday looking at my Chudan when the front window shatters and the robot looks at me from it's kneeling position. "Are you Jin Andou?" and then everything that happened in Terminator will happen...only...with kendo.
