Default Sumo tournament
Hi All,

One thing I would like to see in Japan is a Sumo tournament! Does anyone know how I can find details on when they're on in Japan?

"Official" (as opposed to exhibitions held in between basho (tournaments)) Grand Sumo Tournaments are held in the odd-numbered months and alternate between Tokyo and other cities in Central/Western Japan.
Tounaments start on the second Sunday and last for two weeks.
The schedule:
January-Tokyo
March-Osaka
May-Tokyo
July-Nagoya
September-Tokyo
November-Fukuoka
You can buy tickets the day you want to see the match, but weekend dates are harder to get.

Hi...

So what about 'unofficial' matches? Are they just random and it depends on what city your in?

Guess you didn't try google before you posted? This is really good site for sumo; http://www.sumo.or.jp/eng/. It has dates an locations for the May and July basho and videos from previous basho.

exhibition basho are held in between the ozumo (Grand Sumo) tournaments and are held in a different prefecture each time. there are also the occasional 1-day matches that are like normal knockout competitions. also, sometimes stables are open for people to in and watch keiko. if you want to see the Big Boys (no pun) then this is the only time you will get to see them. there are, however, other competitions ranging from school kids to university students throughout the year.... i know nothing about them.

i went ot the haru-basho in osaka twice this year, day 1 and day 10. it was totally excellent.

Slightly off topic, but do you know why Asashoryu is not in this tournament? I either just missed seeing his matches on TV or reading his name on the score boards online or something happened... do you know?

Sorry but it fits in the sumo thread sort of...
