White Castle was the first burger chain, ever. It is a cultural icon against which all others are measured. Back in my day the burgers were .10 each. When McDonalds got in the game theirs were .15 each I think then .25 but they were bigger. They would sell you two burgers, fries and a coke for .99

We are discussing food here a very serious matter if I may point out.
But is the White Castle Place better because it is/was cheaper or do they taste better?
They were the first burger chain were they also the most tasty one? Or is it that they were the first with a consistent quality/taste along the whole chain? I'm getting the feeling it's all about price instead of quality....
Must visit the States sometime in my life if only to compare these culinary marvels.......

Animal style, my cousins claimed they were the ones to create it. I went to cali for vacation a few years ago and that was when I was introduced to IN n out. Ive only had it a few times, but I cant wait to have it again.

BTW, like ignats said, allmost everything is cut up right there, the tomatoes, the lettuce, the potatoes, ect. Plus, from what I know, its not that bad for you.

McDonalds is just one of the few restaurants that decided to put places abroad. They have the money to do so since they are found just about everywhere in America. These smaller places like White Castle are specific to areas in most cases. For example, Waffle House (not fast food) is a southern thing (on every corner in Atlanta), White Castle is found in the Midwest and In 'n Out is in Southern California.

The main reason why we have so many is because of the american culture to get something quick and good to eat as soon as possible. There is money to be had in a nation that needs precooked food.

About the Grits, they are VERY good. I always fix mine with cheese and butter. But remember, if you ever try grits, only try them in the southern reigon since that is where it is made best!

I had my first Official "White Castle" burger at 45yrs old (last year).

It was monumentally bad! Thus re-enforcing my opinion that folks of the east coast are forced to survive without taste buds.

Stunning really, so much worse than any other burger "food" I have tried... I was truly impressed! Thin, sausage-like, somewhat transparent meat (greese?) on a small, dry, flavorless white bread bun (more of a biscuit really). The fries were... quite simply... inedible! Never had I imagined in my wildest dreams such food was ACTAULLY SOLD for human consumption.

I even tried a "bacon cheese" variant to see if it was, perhaps, better... it wasn't.

Truly a remarkable experiance (Not unlike going to a "Happi House", the worse terriyaki chicken available to mankind) "White Castle" has set a NEW LOW in my extensive dining travels... indeed, "White Castle" was ALMOST AS BAD AS THE SAUSAGE AND POMME FRITZ HOUSES IN EUROPE!!!

"In 'n' Out" is OK in a pinch, but I don't see what the fuss is all about. The bun always falls apart, too much ketchup and mustard glopped on the patty and the fries are like greasy cardboard .... but I guess younger diners simply don't notice.

That being said... "In 'n' Out" is STILL better than ANY McDonalds by a country mile. The basic burger at Micky"D"s is a lame excuse for food at best. Hell, even their so-called "fancy" chicken sandwich is a risky option (only one per month, doctors orders)

Bucking popular trends, I have to say for my money it's a simple "Jack in the Box" Jumbo Jack (no cheese)... more meat, better bun, low price.

The "Grade AAA" burger is found as "Kirk's". The Kirk Burger is a flame cooked 1/2lb. of high quality beef... any kinda cheese ya want, top it yourself from a vast array of toppings. I love this place, but "Kirk's" is only a tiny local chain so only we Nor-Cal-types know what I'm talkin' about... besides I can only eat there on special occasions cause of all that FAT!

Tried those frozen White Castle burgers cos of this thread and I have to say they were terrible. The onions made the burger sort of unique, but jesus, it was like eating a pile of regurgitated McDonalds with some onions tossed in off the floor of a very crusty gas station restroom.

Am I the only person in CA that likes Baker's better than In N Out? Maybe it's the "I don't get to eat it all the time since the nearest one is 40 miles away" factor, but the burgers seem similar, and I generally like their fries better... plus they have a vegetarian menu.

Rojindo, you don't like Whoppers? Some friends and I actually went around buying a Whopper, Jumbo Jack, Big n Tasty, and Famous Star to see which was better. We all agreed the Whopper was best.

Screw chain places anyway, the best burgers are always found at those little joints like Colima Burger. No one is missing out because some fast food chain isn't in their area... unless it's El Pollo Loco.

Innout is good. But not as good i think as Murder Burger in Davis, CA. I don't know if they are still there but I thought they are under Redrum Burger now. They had the eliminator there when i was going to school there and that was 1.5 lbs of burger goodness. I had one half for dinner one night, then saved the other half for dinner the next night. That and one large malt alone just gave me enough calories to last for a couple of years.

Whoppers? Only when I need to eat JUST ONCE in a day. The Whopper is O.K. ... decent by corporate standards... but it is heavy and filled with cheap condiments to hide all the cereal in the meat. Whoppers are indeed a bit more grease for the dollar (last time I was there) but the flavor of the Jumbo Jack is somehow... juicier.

"Murder Burger" sounds like "Kirk's"... food for winter hibernation.

Strange when one has to stop eating for a week just because they found a truly GOOD American-style burger/steak house the week before.

where's your sense of adventure? stir fried silk worm larvas taste just like very dry version of haggis.. or chicken liver. it's not so bad. besides.. it's very high in fiber.

For the foreigners, I'd like to add that White Castle has become somewhat synonomous with drunken/high late-night food eating. There's something about those little burgers that people love when they've been drinking and/or smoking. Maybe it's that they're small enough to eat in one bite or something...I don't know. I *do* know that while they can sometimes hit the spot, they almost always cause massive bowel issues the next day. I haven't had one since high school.

As for the regular chains, I've pretty much written them off, but I will get a Wendy's burger every once in a while...and their fries are the best of that bunch as well.

The funniest thing about McDonald's (et al) in other countries is that the food tastes *nothing* like how it does here. From the burger to the drink, it's completely different.
