What is USKU?
Splinter group, not part of AUSKF or IKF or KKA thus no rank.

Let me get this right: You have the chance to practice in Torrance? With Chris Yang? The same dojo where the ladies korean team-captain in 2000 Songyi Choi also practices?
THAT Torrance dojo? And you are pondering about it?
Great players don't make great coaches.

KKAUSA recognizes USKU ranks.

i think i'm confused about kumdo vs. kendo federations. so there is a seperate kumdo federation and ranks are not interchangeable with kendo ranks? also, are 'kumdo' practitioners allowed to participate in kendo tournaments? just curious.

I think it depends on who is running the tournament. As for the ranks...Well, different federations probably have different standards for passing. And even if they didn't, you'd probably need to re-test for your current rank in your new federation if you're switching from one to another.

And what the hell is the KKAUSA?

Probably not, but they make great partners to keiko.

KKA is part of the IKF so their rank is recognized by any AUSKF dojo. Some KKA dojos participate in IKF shiais. Remnant, for example, competes in the SCKF shiais. USKU is the American version of WKA, and is not part of the IKF. They don't enter IKF shiais and their rank is not transferable from each other. USKU does accept any IKF rank, but apparently, not the other way around.

And what the hell is the KKAUSA? Korean Kumdo Association of USA. It's the US branch of KKA which is the Korean branch of IKF.

I don't doubt that, I also don't doubt that they are great senseis. It's just hard to leave a sensei you feel matches you best you know?

it's the "korean kumdo association in united states of america." i'm a bit skeptical of their "theory" page, the only thing they give the japanese credit for is the development of modern protective armor and the shinai. am i incorrect in thinking that kumdo is an offshoot of kendo and not the other way around?

Historically speaking, yeah, Kumdo is an offshoot of Kendo, which was introduced during the Japanese Ocupation of Korea during the early years of the 20th Century. According to my sensei, about 95% of Koreans accept this as the truth, but the other 5% believe that since the Japanese aparently learned how to make swords from the Koreans in the first place, that all forms of Japanese Swordsmanship, including Kendo, are actually Korean in origin.
