Hey all this was just something i was thinking about last night, do any of you know or have a rough idea which states in the USA are the roughest (alot of gun crime etc) and ones which are very safe?

I'll take a wild guess and say the roughest state(s) are Michigan, Arkansas and Louisiana.

The safest, probably Delaware, New England, North/South Carolina, New York, Texas, Mississippi.

Bearing in mind these are just rough guesses.

The area with the highest rate of gun crime is Washington, D.C., which also has a gun ban. The crime rate just goes to show that gun bans do not work, a fact the Brady Bunch just hasn't accepted, and something the mayor of New York City is trying to ignore.

Contrary to popular belief and the media's sensationalism, there isn't a whole lot to worry about for the average person. There are good areas and bad areas, I've heard that Eau Claire, Wisconsin is supposed to be pretty good as far as low crime is concerned.

In 19th century London, I'm sure that if you walked through the East End at 2:00AM, you stood a good chance of getting robbed, if not killed. I'll bet it's not even safe to walk down the street at night in Glasgow or Edinburgh, either.

Most gun crimes in this country are committed by previously convicted criminals (where do they buy their guns - certainly not legally as I buy all of my guns) against a large population of previously convicted criminals.

I would say that if you live in Montana, Wyoming, or Idaho, you're probably not going to have any problem with crime. If you live in northern Illinois, eastern Missouri, or in the District of Columbia, you are more likely to be accosted.

I don't think there is a demographic that says the South is more polite or less crime-ridden than the North. When you have cities like Atlanta, New Orleans (where the police commit crimes against the people they're sworn to protect), St. Louis, and other large cities, crime in those areas is more likely to occur.

It really depends on the city in which you want to live. Classifiying the entire state isn't a very good idea. Arkansas isn't bad. You would have a worst time in Memphis then in Little Rock. But anyway, I also doubt north california sees as much crime as LA (south california).

You can probably get crime stats on the internet.. I think the FBI carries stuff like that. But as mentioned before it's sort of unfair to categorize a whole state when it's more the particualr city area that is more important to look at.

I wouldn't classify myself as a nut, but I do have firearms....3 rifles, 1 shotgun, and a revolver. Plus several shinais, 2 bokken, and a bunch of plastic cutlery......is there room in Oregon for me?

Slugs rock, especially after they've been slightly "processed" by a duck. I don't know...what do you do that would be classified as "weird" (besides kendo, of course)? If you're not at least a little weird, they won't let you across the border.

Oh, but fish murderers are welcome. "What're you using today?" is always the start of a good lie. "Where are they catching them?" leads to an endless trek to nowhere through the blackberries and the poison oak.

You need to be more specific. I'm guessing that Houghton is a lot safer than Detroit, but they're both in Michigan. The US is a big place.

Well Charlotte, Charleston, Myrtle beach and Northern parts of MS like Aberdeen, Tupelo, Columbus. How are they?

When i was there they looked safe and i heard nothing but thats only 2.5 weeks and a holiday so i cant really judge, thats why i was asking you guys.

Impossible to answer based on states, or even cities. Consider where you live. Surely there are good and bad neighborhoods in almost any town near you.

Think about it this way. The whole of the United Kingdom is slightly smaller than Oregon. You just can't simplify things that much.

The only thing you could really do is narrow it down to what cities you are really considering, and then ask what neighborhoods would be recommended to live in, or avoid.

Though Kentucky seems to come out at a good overall. I know my boyfriend stayed there being at EKU and said it was the best state he's stayed in out of MS, GA, SC.

Actually none of the cities you names are generally considered to be 'high' crime cities. Charlotte for the most part is safe.. but as mentioned by someone earlier pretty much all cities have sections where you might not want to stray especially alone at night and stuff like that.

Many of your posts, and not just in this thread, seem to be concerned about violence in the US. It makes it seem like you think the country is some version of Road Warriors. It's not. It's great - everywhere I've gone in the US has been nice. Just know that, like everywhere around the world, some of the big cities have poor populations where crime is elevated - the "inner city" as it were. That said, in Boston, for example, you can be in a slightly scary area, then drive 2 miles and be in a rich, "safe" area. And the chances of being involved in a violent crime are slim. Don't worry so much.
