I wanst sure where to put so a thread where you could post everything sounds the best
anyone know of any places that sharpen katana's abouve 6 inches long in the mancheschter u.k sort of area
I'd do it myself but I'm more worried of damaging the blade
its only stainless steel
(insert stainless steel doesn't make a real katana argument here)
I've got some pretty decent knifes and swords in my collection all of them stainless steel and all of them can cut pretty much everything trust me you dont want to meet my kitchen knifes
anywho
It did come with a rough edge that needs a bit of work I did some work with a whetstone (or however you spell that)
and is now alot better than it was but needs taking up a level however I'm a bit worried about puttig fine glass paper to it
so any links suggestions or whatever would be greatly appriciated

Well that would all deped on what kind of katana it is. If it's a wall hanger, don't bother. If it's an iaito, again don't bother because it is meant to be dull. If it is in fact a shinken, then the best thing you can do for it is to send it to a professional rather than doing it yourself because you'll only end up damaging the blade. I'm guessing it isn't a shinken because according to you, "it's only stainless steel." Some pictures of your katana would help though.

wouldn't sharpen a wallhanger - they're dangerous when they're sharpened and bits can break/flake off which really ruins the finish.

Sorry, but that's not a katana. That's a Hollywood inspired "Ninja Sword of Appalling Death and Destruction".

Please don't sharpen it, or any other stainless steel sword. Stainless steel makes good knives, but is too brittle to withstand the stress of being used for anything other than a wall ornament in sword lengths.

I covered this one next person? Not with me you didn't. If you go ahead and sharpen it, you'll end up covering it with blood. Doesn't really bother me if you do since Darwin has to get his work in somehow, but it's pretty stupid all the same.

I don't believe it's worth sharpening, but if you feel you must it's your katana, you should know how, or learn to sharpen the blade yourself.

You will find a good maintenance kit there, as well as some katana worth considering replacing the stainless steel decorative piece with.

as for your stainless steel argument razors have the best edges in the world, yes, but how long do they keep their edge? Thickness is also a major factor in razor blades as well.

Sorry but this is the discipline of steel, it's a poor carpenter who can't sharpen his own saw. So what if you do wear it down, if it cost you too much to risk damaging it, you were robbed. You will get it right long before you do irreparable damage to the blade. Keep the stone wet, and your sharpening stroke clean. Be patient, don't bear down on the blade with all your weight. Take your time, enjoy the simplicity of the action, you might find it as very relaxing.

I personally don't feel wall pieces should be given the edge of a shinken, but to each their own.

What good is a sword if it sharp but breaks (due to poor tempering, like many cheap pig-stickers are) at the first sign of action? You may as well sharpen a steel ruler and play samurai with that.

what are you going to use the sharpened katana for anyways? Please promise me you're not going to try iai or anything with it. I know of far too many people who have seriously injured, disfigured or even badly maimed themselves by messing around with swords when they have no training. We all have at least the basics when it comes to swords, and we ALL have had it drilled into us that you treat a sword with RESPECT. Not meaning to get at you here love, but I read your profile and it says that you don't do any martial arts. just been doing my research - i doubt any professional worth his salt would sharpen a katana - after all the killings/maimings tha have been in the news. As well as that, if the police stopped you on your way to the place with the katana you would be arrested because it's an offensive weapon (and a blade, and after all the media attention about knifings etc...) - even if we just have shinai in the car on the way to kendo the BKA is advising us to have our membership books with us at all times... less said the better!

BUPA cover - good idea, i'd hate to hack my arm off on the NHS!
