I was wondering if anyone here had successfully made themselves into a morning person? And I dont mean just going to bed on time so you can get up. I generally go to bed at the same time, relatively early (10-11pm), and fall asleep easily. But getting up is hard. And by hard I mean I GODDAMN HATE IT.
I will wake up at around 3-4am to go to the loo or whatever, and feel pretty alert, then drift back off to sleep. By the time my alarm goes off at 7, Im in a deep sleep and forcing myself up out of bed is awful. Im a zombie. Id love o be able to go jogging in the mornings, or turn up to a saturday morning kendo training with a bit of energy, instead of waking up after being hit 12 times. Has anyone here successfully become a morning person? |

Well... I did, but it didn’t last long... We have daily Kendo training at 6:00AM at my dojo... It was the only reason I started going to bed at 23:00... After a week doing this I did it... But I need to wake up at 5:30 and drink a good cup of coffee to be alert and full of energy at 6:00.
Ah... And I don't eat much before the training... Just a banana or a bread slice and chocolate milk. Unfortunately... I can't sleep at 23:00 anymore because of work... So sometimes I go to dojo with 4 hours of sleep or even without sleep... |

Wow, I've never heard of Kendo training at that hour before. Everywhere I've ever seen in the USA has schedules consisting of weeknight evenings and weekend afternoons. Is early morning training the norm in Japan as well? I got this link from a friend, but you could do worse than try out: http://www.stevepavlina.com/blog/200...n-early-riser/ He also has an article about getting up the moment your alarm clock goes off. I'm not good at it either, but this guy managed to live for 5 months or so on a polyphasic sleep schedule so he's pretty hardcore. His profile is also pretty amusing: http://www.stevepavlina.com/about-steve-pavlina.htm |

I happen to be a morning person when Iīm stressed up, but actually.. I donīt like it. however, donīt trust those guys that tell you go to sleep earlier, all that is crap. sleep cycles are different from one to another, so itīs inaccurate to say go to sleep at 9 O` ...the only thing you can trust are pills, you can manage what time to fall asleep aswell as when to get up... so... go get yourself to a shrink =P !!

I don't know it is the norm in Japan, but I know that there are people training early there... But I think that in Japan they have people training at any time of the day!
We choose 6:00AM because people here usually work at 8:00, so we can end at 7:30 and go straight to work. Our dojo is at a University and most of us study or work there. I can assure it is the best way to start a day! |

I think you would find if you stayed up after to loo stop you would find you have heaps of energy for the morning. (I don't know what would happen in the afternoon though). |

Some idiot I know got up at 4:45 on saturday to go to morning practice... Alison2805, I am very jealous of you. Ive basically got chronic insomnia. I cant get to sleep even when I am v.tired. When I do its light and I wake up at the slightest noise. If im not alone in bed it causes havoc to what little chance I have of getting to sleep as well. To top it all off I always wake up around 630-7am everyday... regardless. Once my eyes are open, thats it: awake. It really affects my life in a bad way. Ive tried booze, sleeping pills, music, white noise, incense, reading, etc etc. The only thing that does seem to help me is physical exhaustion... and perhaps thats why im kind of addicted to kendo. Except now I generally breeze through keiko without any problems.... so I need a crazy schedule to get tired........ Being a bad early riser is nothing. |

As for the polyphasic thing - Ive tried it and having naps makes me groggy and grumpy..... i've tried a bit of wine or soemthing to help gettign to sleep a whiles back, and it worked okay untill about 4 hours in, I'd be up. The only thing to send me into a deep deep satisfying, wake up feeling good thing is after i'm exhausted and mayjor projects were finsihed and stuff... I'm out dead untill 9-10 hours later. ...hmm maybe its stress.. |

For more years than I care to remember, I used to get up at 5.00 am Tue - Fri, but on weekends I got to sleep in until 5.20 am .
The only advice I'd give is find/join a group of people you can train with, it's a lot easier to meet a comitment with other people verses train by yourself. The other thing is, get used to it now, once winter arrives it takes on a whole new meaning !!!! BTW you'll also need - 1 A good expresso machine 2 Accept that fact that by noon, your only thinking about sleeping 3 The fact that you leave parties when they start to get going cause you need to sleep Outside of that - it's not that hard |

If you had been going to morning practise youself it wouldnt have caused any problems! And I agree, my problem is nowhere near as frustrating as insomnia. |

Perhaps I should get one of these alarm clocks, what an awesome idea!
http://alumni.media.mit.edu/~nanda/projects/clocky.html. Ive even heard of one that is the shape of a chicken on a nest - when the alarm goes off the chicken stands up and eggs go flying around the room. The only way to turn the alarm off is to find the eggs and put them back in the nest. I reckon it would last about 2 days.... |

booze, sleeping pills err..not at the same time I hope..Dont think it works.
I'm one of those disgusting morning-persons who almost literary jumps out of bed 5 minutes after I wake and gets an instant clear head. Of course, the shower helps but it mostly comes natural. I dont even drink coffee or tea. I'm not grumpy in the morning, I'm actually fairly cheerful . It's -15 degrees celsious here this week and yet even at 05.50 when I'm waiting outside for my bus I aint cold... I dont blame you for hating me..for I am the morning person....Fear me!! |
